Get ready for some serious thrills (and laughs!) because Sony just dropped a brand-new clip from the upcoming Resident Evil movie, and it’s already generating buzz. Director Zach Cregger is bringing his signature comedic horror style to this adaptation, promising a wild ride for fans of both.
A Near-Death Experience on Film
The clip features Austin Abrams as Bryan, the hapless medical courier, sprinting through the zombie-infested streets of Raccoon City. Zombies are launching themselves from rooftops in an attempt to take him down, resulting in spectacular (and messy) explosions upon impact. The visual effects are intense, with blood spraying everywhere.
What’s even more impressive is that Cregger opted for practical effects whenever possible. Instead of relying solely on CGI, the production team crafted 150-pound “body-sized blood bags” suspended from cranes to create the explosive impact. According to Cregger, one of these blood bags came dangerously close to hitting Abrams, and he joked that it “would’ve killed him.”
Embracing the Horror Comedy Blend
Cregger describes Bryan as an “idiot” who finds himself in a terrifying situation and is simply trying to survive. This blend of horror and humor seems to be at the heart of the film, promising a unique take on the Resident Evil universe.
The director emphasized that the entire movie feels like “one gigantic sequence,” with things escalating rapidly just five minutes in and maintaining that intensity until the very end. He draws inspiration directly from the games, aiming to replicate their structure of moving from one challenging set-piece to another, where each location presents a unique obstacle.
Resident Evil hits theaters on September 18th, and expectations are high for it to achieve the biggest opening weekend ever for a Resident Evil film. Get ready for a wild ride!
