Four decades after Optimus Prime’s shocking onscreen death sent shockwaves through 1986 theater audiences, Hasbro is finally confronting the moment that defined a generation of fans. Marking the 40th anniversary of The Transformers: The Movie, the toy giant has unveiled “The Apology Tour,” an ambitious marketing campaign featuring a new line of tie-in toys and a 4K theatrical rerelease in partnership with Fathom Entertainment, set to open on September 17.

The initiative represents an unusual pivot for a company long associated with the film’s most painful scene. When Optimus Prime was struck down less than half an hour into the movie, fans were left reeling from what many considered an irreversible blow. Despite the film’s beautiful animation, Orson Welles voicing a giant mechanical planet, and a compelling story, that single moment overshadowed everything else for decades. Hasbro now appears determined to reclaim that narrative by embracing rather than hiding from it.

Acknowledging a Lasting Impression

The campaign’s central theme revolves around the idea that fans never truly moved past Optimus’ death, and Hasbro wants to honor that emotional investment. According to Alyse D’Antuono, Vice President of Global Brand Strategy at Action Brands, this moment remains deeply embedded in the franchise’s identity.

“The power of The Transformers: The Movie is that fans never stopped talking about it,” says D’Antuono. “For so many kids who experienced the movie in 1986, Optimus Prime wasn’t just a favorite character. He was their hero. He represented courage, leadership and doing the right thing, so seeing the story take such an unexpected turn left a lasting impression. We never wanted to shy away from that history. We wanted to acknowledge why that moment mattered.”

D’Antuono noted that the anniversary campaign carries personal significance for some within the company itself. Several team members currently working on the Transformers brand experienced the film firsthand as children, giving them direct insight into its cultural impact.

“We have several team members working on the Transformers brand today that experienced the movie firsthand as kids,” D’Antuono explains. “They remember what it felt like sitting in the theater, and those personal memories really helped shape how we approached the anniversary. We didn’t have to imagine what the movie meant to fans because we had people in the room who lived it themselves.”

A New Final Chapter for Optimus Prime

Fans attending the theatrical rerelease will receive more than just a chance to watch the classic film in stunning 4K. Hasbro has also announced an entirely new animated short, offering something fresh while maintaining continuity through familiar voices.

“Optimus Prime: Awakening is a fully realized, 12-minute animated short featuring Peter Cullen’s final original voice performance as Optimus Prime, alongside Frank Welker returning as Megatron and Soundwave,” D’Antuono explains.

The announcement carries profound weight given the recent passing of Peter Cullen. The legendary voice actor died two weeks ago at age 85, just as “The Apology Tour” campaign was gaining momentum. His death has only deepened the emotional resonance of Hasbro’s anniversary plans.

“It’s hard to overstate what Peter meant to the Transformers franchise,” D’Antuono says. “He gave Optimus Prime his voice, but he also gave him so much of his character. The strength, compassion, integrity, and gentleness people associate with Optimus were qualities Peter had himself. He shaped childhoods, inspired generations and helped create a connection between the Transformers franchise and its audience that continues to endure today.”

Cullen reportedly viewed his return for Optimus Prime: Awakening as a homecoming to a character he had shaped for over four decades. The collaboration with Frank Welker, who returns as both Megatron and Soundwave, adds another layer of significance to the project.

“More than anything, we hope this anniversary serves as a celebration of Peter’s extraordinary legacy and the person behind the voice,” D’Antuono concludes. “We’re incredibly grateful for everything Peter gave to Optimus, to the franchise and to the generations of fans who found a hero in the character.”

Looking Ahead

The theatrical rerelease begins September 17, offering fans both old and new an opportunity to experience The Transformers: The Movie in a renewed format. Alongside the film presentation, attendees will have access to Optimus Prime: Awakening, making this anniversary event particularly special for those who can witness Cullen’s final original performance on the big screen.

The broader “The Apology Tour” campaign extends beyond the theatrical experience with its new line of Transformers toys. While specific details about these products remain limited, they represent Hasbro’s commitment to celebrating the franchise’s rich history while honoring both its most painful moments and the voice actors who brought its characters to life.

As fans anticipate the September 17 rerelease, the campaign stands as a testament to how deeply The Transformers: The Movie remains woven into the fabric of the franchise. What was once considered a stain on the film’s legacy now serves as a unifying moment for a community that continues to care deeply about Optimus Prime and his fellow Autobots after four decades.
