Zombies Infest Los Santos as Modder Transforms GTA 5 into a Halloween Horror Show

A PC modder has transformed Grand Theft Auto 5 into an undead apocalypse, installing a zombie overhaul that turns the sun-soaked streets of Los Santos into a shambling horde. The modification adds infected pedestrians to the open world, converting ordinary citizens into revenants on contact and unleashing cascading waves of the walking dead across one of gaming’s most familiar cities.

The modder, who documents their ongoing experiments with Rockstar’s title in a daily series, described the project as part of an effort “to either transform it into a PC version of GTA 6 or break it entirely.” The latest addition arrives just in time for Halloween, replacing the usual traffic jams and shootouts with a slower, creepier kind of chaos.

The Dead Arrive at the Beach

In a fittingly seasonal turn, the update brings the undead to areas as varied as Los Santos’ beaches and its denser urban districts. Players wandering through populated spaces will soon notice certain pedestrians moving with an unnatural gait, their skin pallid and their steps uneven—clearly rejected by the grave. As the modder put it, “there is no more room in hell,” so the cursed have wandered into the game world instead.

The infection spreads through simple contact. When a zombie brushes up against an uninfected citizen, that person converts almost instantly to the horde. What begins as two or three bloodied figures can balloon into a city-wide catastrophe within minutes, offering what the modder called “a good way of demonstrating the power of exponential growth.”

I’m modding GTA 5 every day in a quest to either transform it into a PC version of GTA 6 or break it entirely. Come back tomorrow to find out what new horrible thing I’ve done to Rockstar’s baby.

GTA 5 Modder

The undead are deliberately slow and just as vulnerable as any other character in the game, falling victim to tornadoes, vehicles, and fire like everyone else. In practice, many zombies never manage to do real damage, often being eliminated by Los Santos’ countless ambient threats before they can overwhelm a player—a development that drew wry praise from the modder as “a lesson for mayors everywhere.”

Even Immortality Cannot Save You

The most striking side effect of the overhaul concerns Franklin, one of GTA 5’s three playable protagonists. In this particular install, Franklin has been rendered completely invincible, surviving tornadoes and being used as a car ramp with impunity in previous experiments. The zombie mod is apparently powerful enough to pierce that protection: linger near an infected pedestrian for long enough and even the immortal protagonist will finally succumb.

The revelation prompted a note of genuine alarm from the modder, who observed that “let a zombie brush up against him for long enough and he will succumb to the afterworld like any other mortal. It’s very scary.” The comment capped off an otherwise lighthearted run-through of what is essentially a seasonal easter egg layered on top of an already heavily modified game.

The experiment forms part of a broader, ongoing series in which the creator continually pushes GTA 5 toward new extremes, documenting each change for readers who follow along day by day. The current build has accumulated so many modifications that the world appears “burdened and bedraggled” under the weight of them all.

Looking Ahead

The zombie overhaul is available now for players willing to install it, arriving as a seasonal flourish ahead of Halloween rather than an official update from Rockstar. The modder has promised more experiments in the coming days, inviting followers to return and see what new changes land next on Rockstar’s heavily altered creation.

For those hoping to try the transformation themselves or explore further modifications, additional resources remain available online, including guides covering everything from GTA 6 details to the game’s many customization options. Whether it becomes a permanent fixture in this modder’s install or merely another temporary horror remains to be seen—though for now, Los Santos belongs to the dead.
