Xbox is reportedly losing money on every console it sells, thanks to AI

The relentless expansion of AI data centers is squeezing the gaming industry, but corporate giants are also feeling the pressure.

Every console, including the Xbox Series X|S, relies on memory modules that must be procured before assembly. The soaring demand from global AI data centers has driven these components to sky‑high prices, directly impacting newly produced units.

Consequently, Microsoft has been forced to sell recent batches of the Series X|S at a deficit of roughly $150 per unit, as reported by Windows Central’s Jez Corden. Even after prior price increases, the company is compelled to adjust again, because the cumulative loss is significant.

Beginning August 1, the retail price of every Xbox Series X|S will rise by $100 in an effort to offset these deficits. The burden falls squarely on consumers, who will shoulder the cost of the AI‑driven supply crunch.

Industry insiders are already speculating that the next wave of home consoles will arrive between 2027 and 2028, with Microsoft’s Project Helix poised to launch in that window and Sony’s forthcoming PlayStation 6 expected to be an entirely digital, disc‑free system.

It appears that Sony and Nintendo are feeling the pressure as well, prompting them to raise prices in an attempt to offset losses. While operating at a loss is detrimental to any business, the industry has been grappling with these financial strains for several challenging years.

In short, I’m not surprised that companies are losing money as the situation they helped create becomes increasingly unmanageable and frightening day by day.
