Xbox Braces for More Layoffs and Studio Consolidation as Halo’s Future Shaken Up

September 24, 2026 · Gamer24H Editorial Team

Microsoft’s Xbox division is reportedly set to cut “hundreds” more jobs this week and announce the consolidation of several of its game studios, according to a new report from well-informed tech industry publication The Information. The news arrives as the platform’s leadership pushes through a sweeping restructuring under new CEO Asha Sharma, who has signaled a sharp focus on the group’s biggest franchises. Alongside the workforce reductions, rumors are circulating that the Halo brand itself could be moved under Activision Blizzard, sending shockwaves through a community that has long watched the franchise’s future with a mixture of hope and anxiety.

The announcement follows a turbulent period for the company. In July, Sharma oversaw the elimination of 1,600 jobs and committed to reducing Xbox’s workforce by a total of 3,200 staff over the next year. Those cuts were concentrated in areas such as Game Studios, but not every part of the organization was affected. Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier recently told the 8-4 Play podcast that layoffs at Blizzard Entertainment — which was spared in the first round of job cuts — were “imminent,” adding to a wave of warnings from game journalists that difficult news was on the horizon.

Consolidation and the Halo Question

While the layoffs are not entirely unexpected, news of studio consolidation among Xbox’s game labels is genuinely new. The Information has offered no further detail on which studios are involved, leaving speculation to run wild. Xbox is a vast organization; since the acquisition spree under former CEO Phil Spencer in the late 2010s and early 2020s, it comprises at least three major, operationally distinct publishers — Xbox Game Studios, Bethesda Softworks, and Activision Blizzard. Even accounting for the fact that Activision and Blizzard currently operate as separate publishing entities, there is clearly plenty of room for internal reshuffling.

The strongest version of the rumor, backed by reliable leaker NateTheHate, is that the Halo brand is to be moved under Activision Blizzard. NateTheHate said that while Halo was moving, they did not know the fate of developer Halo Studios, suggesting that a new developer would take over the franchise under the auspices of the Call of Duty publisher. The implication is significant: a franchise that has defined Xbox’s identity for more than two decades could find itself under a different corporate umbrella.

“More than just Halo” will move to Activision Blizzard, and other studios will move to different companies within Xbox.

According to the leaker, additional moves are possible, with Obsidian Entertainment potentially shifting from Xbox Game Studios to Bethesda. This is pure speculation at present, but it would make logical sense given that Obsidian is already collaborating with Bethesda Game Studios on a new Fallout game. The pattern emerging from these rumors points toward a consolidation of resources around marquee intellectual properties, with smaller or overlapping studios absorbed into larger operations.

A Restructure Backed from the Top

Sharma has promised a sweeping restructure at Xbox, and she is said to favor a clear focus on the group’s biggest franchises. According to The Information, Microsoft top brass Satya Nadella and Amy Hood have shelved the idea of carving out or selling off Xbox in favor of supporting Sharma’s overhaul. This is a notable development, as it signals that the parent company’s leadership has chosen to back the platform’s internal transformation rather than pursue an external exit strategy.

The decision reflects a broader strategic recalibration. Rather than fragmenting the business or divesting assets, Microsoft appears to be betting on internal efficiency and franchise-centric development to drive the next phase of growth. For players and developers alike, the practical question is how these moves will affect the studios and franchises most closely associated with Xbox’s identity — Halo, Fallout, and the many titles developed across its sprawling roster.

Looking Ahead

As the layoffs and consolidation rumors continue to unfold, the Xbox community remains closely watching for official confirmation. The Information has not disclosed specifics on which studios are affected or the exact timing of the Halo move, and NateTheHate acknowledged uncertainty around the future of Halo Studios itself. Until Microsoft provides clarity, speculation will likely intensify, with fans and industry observers weighing the strategic logic behind each potential merger.

What is clear is that Xbox is in the midst of a significant transformation, one that could reshape the landscape of its game studios for years to come. Whether these moves ultimately strengthen the group’s biggest franchises or disrupt the creative teams behind them remains to be seen. For now, the focus is on the immediate wave of job cuts and the consolidation of studios, with the fate of Halo serving as the most high-profile symbol of a platform in flux.
