Blizzard’s WoW: Forever has turned out to be far more approachable for casual players than its “hardcore” reputation suggests, according to a PC Gamer column examining the game’s deliberately retro design philosophy.

The writer notes that trade chat in WoW: Forever is full of players looking down on retail counterparts, but argues this self-image doesn’t match reality. Despite playing with a 9-5 job and other titles, they describe themselves as competent rather than hardcore—having cleared high-end content elsewhere—but not part of the daily grind culture.

The column frames WoW’s difficulty history as a “water cycle,” beginning with vanilla’s oldschool mindset: an open world requiring patience and cooperation where reaching level 60 was itself the journey. This evolved through Cataclysm into something more straightforward, before borrowed power systems like artifact weapons and Covenants emerged to keep players logging in during expansions where most content came easily.

These systems eventually shifted from beloved progression mechanics to reviled tedium, particularly because missing a day or week left players permanently behind. Blizzard responded with seasonal structures meant to solve this problem.

Seasons remove the permanent penalty of borrowed power and pack in mostly secondary rewards like cosmetics. But they create their own issues: meaningful progress resets at season’s end, there’s an awkward gap when joining midway, and demotivation repeats across major patches. The column argues seasons sometimes become so overwhelming they push away exactly the casual players they were designed to attract.

This is where WoW: Forever strikes a chord. Rather than bombarding players with quests on every login—five delves, three dungeons, ten world quests in an average evening—the game offers simpler activities like collecting pelts or running Ragefire Chasm when time permits.

The levelling experience remains chill by design, offering “little snack-sized adventures” completable in 40 minutes. Return after a month and nothing has changed—a stark contrast to seasonal pressure.

“It might be easy to be fooled into thinking that…that it is somehow a more difficult game,” the writer states. “I am here to tell you that Forever is not hard.” The oldschool difficulty stems from patience and knowledge rather than mechanical skill, whether pulling mobs with a bow or travelling across zones to learn basic combat.

Clay Stone, associate production director, told the column that players with heavy responsibilities outside gaming may actually prefer this slower pace amid today’s constant notifications and distractions.

“It could be something with the times that we live in. It could be something with the amount of information and noise that we’re facing all the time, the distractions of all the notifications on my phone that are glaring at me all day, but there’s a real longing for that slower, more deliberate pace.”

The conclusion is that WoW: Forever is casual friendly in the same way titles like Webfishing or Animal Crossing are—relaxing and cosy rather than demanding. For those not interested in min-maxing, it offers a decompression option for an hour of spare time.
