Worms: Galactic Tactics – Can This Turn-Based Strategy Game Save the Beloved Franchise?

In the ever-expanding universe of turn-based strategy games, it seems like everyone is trying to create their own version of XCOM. From Star Wars to Rainbow Six, and even Warhammer 40K, the genre has become incredibly crowded. Now, the iconic worms of Worms are entering the fray with Worms: Galactic Tactics, a grid-based battler slated for release sometime in 2027.

A Bold New Direction

Worms: Galactic Tactics features a 3D perspective and grid-based combat system.

While the genre is saturated, Worms: Galactic Tactics shows real promise. I had the opportunity to play several rounds with the developers at Gamescom last month, and it’s clear that this game aims to strike a balance between innovation and tradition. It’s 3D, which might raise some eyebrows among purists, but the focus on single-player campaign, roguelike structure, and online/local multiplayer modes suggests a deep and engaging experience.

Gameplay Mechanics

Worms: Galactic Tactics character customization options

Players can customize their worms with various weapons and abilities.

One of the most surprising aspects is that Team17, the publisher, greenlit this project, considering the original developers seemingly swore off 3D Worms games two decades ago. However, what I played was enjoyable, and there’s a good chance that Galactic Tactics could successfully blend new elements with the familiar “Wormsy” feel.

The aiming system is a prime example of this balance. Instead of simply clicking on a target and hoping for the best, players must manually aim their projectiles. A timing-based minigame determines accuracy, rewarding skilled shots with critical damage while punishing mistakes with hilarious mishaps. This clever system preserves the skillshots that define the series while ensuring that any blunders are entirely the player’s fault. The brief window to make the click also injects some urgency back into the gameplay.

Strategic Positioning

The game emphasizes strategic positioning and utilizing environmental hazards.

Positioning remains crucial, with a strong emphasis on gaining a height advantage. While defensive bonuses exist for staying in cover or near shield generators, the aiming system makes it easier to land critical shots from above. This encourages aggressive play, trading safety for the glory of multi-hit bazooka blasts.

A Blend of Strategy and Chaos

Worms: Galactic Tactics environmental destruction example

Environmental destruction plays a key role in creating tactical opportunities and comedic moments.

This interplay between smart moves and dumb accidents, strategy and improv, is what has always drawn players back to Worms. And, at least recently, the games themselves. I’m eager to see how multiplayer pans out, but Galactic Tactics seems to grasp the systemic elements that make these games work, roguelike remixing or no. If it doesn’t quite hit the mark, Absolutely Games is also developing a classic-styled Worms game for later release. That’s a lot of squeaking wriggletubes!
