After two decades of increasingly complex design, World of Warcraft is returning to its roots with a fresh approach that makes it the most welcoming entry point into Blizzard’s long-running MMORPG since launch. Announced at BlizzCon as “World of Warcraft Forever,” the new version reimagines the game as it existed around 2006 while layering in modern conveniences, promising to lower barriers for newcomers, casual players, and lapsed veterans alike.

The title captures a paradox central to Blizzard’s design philosophy. While WoW Classic offers a pure throwback to the original experience, Forever functions as what fans dubbed “Classic Plus,” introducing new zones, quests, dungeons, a playable race, quality-of-life improvements, upgraded visuals, and several radical modernizations that have never reached the main game. Yet it deliberately sidesteps most of the design philosophy shifts accumulated over 20 years.

A Controller-First Experience

World of Warcraft Forever marks the first iteration of the franchise to feature official controller support, delivering native, plug-and-play gamepad controls and interface tested directly by developers. While Blizzard has offered solid accessibility options for years and third-party mods have long existed, this represents the first time the studio has refined pad controls itself.

This expansion dramatically broadens how players can engage with the title, enabling sessions from a sofa or on PC handhelds without requiring a desk setup. It also lowers friction for younger audiences who may be drawn to the world but struggle with mouse-and-keyboard mechanics—a group unlikely to experiment with add-ons anyway.

A Realm-Free World

Perhaps the most consequential structural change involves network infrastructure, which Blizzard describes as making Forever “realm free.” In standard WoW, character creation requires joining a server that determines who shares your world, creating an enduring barrier to playing with friends. That restriction has loosened over time but remains fundamental.

The entire playerbase is only segmented by playstyle: Normal, PvP, Roleplay, and in the future, a Hardcore permadeath mode.

Blizzard Entertainment

In Forever, all other artificial barriers are removed while Blizzard ensures players consistently encounter the same community. The original strict faction segregation between Horde and Alliance returns as one of its most immersive features. If a friend plays Forever, you can play with them—sweeping away what many consider one of the franchise’s most frustrating antiquated systems.

A Permanently Fixed Level Cap

The central design idea behind Forever involves “horizontal expansion” rather than vertical growth. Blizzard has committed to never raising the level cap past 60, instead adding content across existing level bands over time—a philosophy that distinguishes it from nearly every other MMO.

This approach eliminates the catch-up anxiety and confusing defamiliarization players experience when returning to live-service games after long absences. A game composed of distinct versions stacked atop one another remains unavoidably bloated and contradictory, but Forever will remain consistent indefinitely, removing a perennial headache that modern WoW has continually struggled to address through tutorials and catch-up modes.

Unsolving the Game

Beyond familiar territory, Blizzard says it invested special effort into “unsolving” the experience—making it less thoroughly known so players can rediscover discovery. This involves redesigning classes, refreshing the loot table, and rethinking itemization and stat bonuses to enable new builds and synergies.

The goal is to imbue a 20-year-old title with a sense of exploration that discourages pure optimization, offering what amounts to a genuinely fresh start even if players wonder how long that novelty will last.

A Nostalgic Yet Fresh Aesthetic

Forever’s visual approach diverges from typical remasters by leaving original low-poly art assets untouched while drastically updating rendering technology for lighting, fog, and water. This preserves what Blizzard considers a timeless art style while adding atmospheric richness.

Players can toggle between original “SD” models and more detailed “HD” versions, though even the HD models were retrofitted with classic animation routines to avoid appearing out of place. The result—retro yet contemporary—rivals the aesthetic appeal of modern indie titles or Square Enix’s HD-2D style, offering something arguably more distinctive than WoW Classic’s stark 2004 presentation.

Looking Ahead

The argument that old-school gameplay might be more approachable than modern WoW remains debatable. While Forever is not easier—featuring slow combat, leveling, travel times, and no dungeon matchmaking—it may feel less pressured and overwhelming by presenting a harsher yet simpler world unburdened by two decades of accumulated systems.

During its BlizzCon reveal, Blizzard repeatedly emphasized wanting the game to prioritize the journey over the destination, echoing the spirit of WoW at launch. World of Warcraft Forever begins beta testing on September 17 and launches November 4.
