Microsoft has just taken a significant step to enhance multimedia on Windows 11 by introducing a shared‑audio feature that mirrors the popular function found on iOS and macOS, finally addressing a long‑standing limitation of the operating system.
With the new update, users can now connect and use two pairs of wireless headphones or earphones simultaneously on a single computer, allowing two people to listen to the same content without the need for external software.
According to statements released by Microsoft to Windows Latest, this shared‑audio capability is rolling out gradually through patch KB5089573, part of build 26200.8524. Once the update is installed, a dedicated button will appear in the Quick Settings panel on the taskbar’s volume icon, granting easy access to the feature.
Beyond the connection prerequisite, the PC’s motherboard must also support the “audio broadcast” capability—a technical requirement that, for now, lacks a manual check within the system settings. Microsoft has clarified that if the shared‑audio toggle does not appear in the coming weeks as the update rolls out, the hardware is unlikely to meet broadcast standards. The company also reminds users that both connected devices must be LE Audio‑certified to participate.
Should a user wish to terminate a shared session, simply press the stop button in the pairing menu. This action will immediately halt the joint transmission without disconnecting the headphones from the computer.
Notably, the upcoming Windows 11 update does more than add this long‑awaited audio support. It introduces a low‑latency profile for smoother performance and unlocks the ability to run the webcam across multiple applications simultaneously, delivering a comprehensive suite of enhancements that will be deployed in the coming weeks.
