Who Killed Hal Jordan on Lanterns? Ranking the Five Prime Suspects

In episode 6, viewers learn that a ringless Hal “took the fall” and spent a decade in prison, only to die shortly after returning to Rushville to reunite with Kerry and attempt to repair the town he helped destroy.

The Case Against Each Suspect

Episode 6 explores the fallout from Hal’s murder as John joins Kerry’s investigation, even convincing her to deputize him so he can attend the autopsy and examine the evidence firsthand. The medical examiner establishes that Hal was shot from the front at point-blank range, with no signs of a struggle — a detail that suggests he either knew his killer or never considered them a threat. Episode 6 of Lanterns

John Stewart emerges as the episode’s most obvious red herring. He now runs a successful architecture company in Midway City, and when his mother calls to say Hal wants to apologize, John drives to Rushville and meets Hal at a diner — only to discover his mother was stretching the truth. Their argument ends with John punching Hal and seemingly breaking his nose, and Hal is killed that very night. Kerry assumes whoever broke Hal’s nose also shot him, making John the prime suspect if the meeting comes to light. Yet the timeline works against him: the drive between the two towns takes several hours, and John leaves Midway near sunset, reaches Rushville after dark, drives home, and returns again while it is still nighttime. He simply would not have the time to commit the murder.

Sheriff Kerry Kane confronts the possibility herself over breakfast, and the show offers no clean exoneration. She and Billy Macon had been separated for three years — largely because of the letters Hal sent her — and she never told their son Noah about it. They had been dating only a few months at best, and she had no motive whatsoever, especially given how much she helped Hal and John in 2016 despite her supposed loyalty to Zoe.

Maggie (Hannah Christine Shetler), the waitress who witnessed the diner confrontation, pours coffee for John and Kerry the next morning and deliberately dodges Kerry’s questions about Hal’s final hours. She claims Hal was alone, then gives John a wink. Maggie later approaches John at Hal’s house and demands exactly $314,536.27 — the cost of Rushville’s destruction — and reveals she was the little girl John encountered while walking through the wreckage after Zoe’s death. Billy Macon (Jason Ritter) has nothing but hatred for Green Lanterns, especially Hal, and Hal and Kerry’s romance ended his marriage. Doubly so because Hal and John’s actions led to the death of Billy’s father and step-mother. But Billy almost seems like the too-obvious choice, and he has always come across as a bit of a coward, making cold-blooded murder unlikely.

Looking Ahead

That leaves the prime suspect: Noah Macon. Kerry and Billy’s son lost his grandfather and step-grandmother during the 2016 disaster, and his town was partially destroyed. Years later, Hal returned and began dating his mother. Over dinner with John and Kerry, Noah appears remarkably calm about all of this — friendly and charming for someone his age, welcoming even after John beats up his father, and unbothered by Kerry’s relationship with Hal. Hal was killed in the bleachers of Rushville’s football stadium, where Noah has become a hotshot on the town football team, making the location of the murder oddly poignant.

Episode 5 also planted two ominous moments involving Noah. When Zoe says goodbye, she tells him, “Promise you’ll remember everything I told you,” and among her lessons is to “see without being seen” — the Manhunter philosophy in a nutshell. That is also how Noah functions within the show: always nearby without drawing too much attention to himself. Hal would likely have allowed him to get close enough to pull the trigger, not perceiving any kind of threat. If Noah is half as smart as his step-grandmother, then he’ll know the best way to get away with murder is to never let anybody think you’re actually capable of it in the first place.
