The world of Dungeons & Dragons has captivated players for decades, offering glimpses into magical realms. Now, with the upcoming Warlock game, Invoke Studios is inviting players to explore a darker corner of this beloved tabletop IP. During gameplay reveal at Gamescom Opening Night Live, GameSpot had the opportunity to chat with Dominic Guay and Jeff Hattem, General Manager and VP at Invoke, respectively, to delve into the details of this exciting new title.

A Descent into Darkness

Set beyond the familiar landscapes of Mists of Darkon, Warlock puts players in control of Taasha, a powerful sorceress who wields dark magic through pacts. Invoke Studios emphasized that they were given considerable creative freedom in developing this game. “We’re expanding and evolving the franchise,” explained Guay and Hattem. “We’re going into one of the darker fantasy corners of D&D: Domains of Dread. We’re building out the monster encyclopedia, giving players a vast array of creatures to choose from, and we’re both expanding on things that are integrated into D&D and creating entirely new spells. We’re also reinterpreting some classic spells from previous editions.”

Unlike the party-based gameplay of titles like Baldur’s Gate 3, Warlock offers a direct character control experience, presented in a third-person perspective and single-player format. Players will embody Kaatri, casting spells and wielding melee weapons to battle the dangerous creatures of Darkon.

“D&D is all about player creativity, and for me, personally, I wanted to create a system that allowed players to express that creativity through magic,” added Guay and Hattem. “The Warlock class is centered around magic, and we really wanted to represent that in the game. It’s incredibly fun to be creative with magic, to manipulate elements, influence the world, affect systems, and gain an advantage over monsters.”

A Spectrum of Tone

So, what kind of overall tone can players expect from Warlock? The game’s trailer features music reminiscent of Tool, hinting at a darker fantasy experience. However, developers assure that the game will also feature moments of levity and humor to balance the atmosphere.

“It’s definitely a dark fantasy game, but it has lightness, vibrancy, and colorful moments,” said Guay and Hattem. “We’re going into Darkon, which is a vast and open world with diverse biomes and plenty to discover. You’ll meet a wide range of characters with different personalities. Taasha, for example, is quite chaotic and cheerful, but you’ll also encounter darker characters in Darkon. So, I think players will find a very diverse range of tones; it’s not just one atmosphere.”

A Gateway to Darkness

Warlock aims to be both an accessible entry point for newcomers to the D&D universe and an engaging experience for seasoned fans. Invoke emphasizes that Kaatri is designed to help players become familiar with the world of D&D, while experienced players will find numerous Easter eggs and references throughout the game.

“If you’re looking to immerse yourself in a D&D-inspired action-adventure game filled with familiar spells and creatures, this is the game for you,” concluded Guay and Hattem.

Scheduled for release in 2027, Warlock features Tricia Helfer (Battlestar Galactica) as Kaatri and Maggie Robertson (Orin the Red in Baldur’s Gate 3) lending her voice to the project. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting new title!
