Get ready to delve into a darker corner of the Dungeons & Dragons universe with Warlock, an upcoming action-adventure game from Invoke Studios. While titles like Baldur’s Gate 3 have captivated players with their strategic depth, Warlock promises a more direct and visceral experience, putting you in control of Kaatri as she wields both magic and steel against the horrors of Darkon. We recently spoke with Dominic Guay and Jeff Hattem of Invoke Studios to learn more about this exciting new take on the beloved tabletop RPG.

A Journey into Darkness: Warlock’s Unique Approach

Unlike many D&D adaptations, Warlock offers a third-person perspective and single-player focus, allowing players to directly control Kaatri. This means no more relying solely on dice rolls; instead, you’re actively shaping her destiny through skillful combat and strategic spellcasting. “We’re expanding upon what exists within the D&D universe,” explains Guay. “We’re going into Domains of Dread, a darker fantasy corner of D&D. We’ve been given a lot of freedom to create something truly special.”

The game features an expansive bestiary filled with creatures both familiar and terrifying. Invoke Studios is also innovating on the magic system, allowing players to express their creativity through spellcasting. “For me, it was important to create a system that allowed players to express themselves creatively through magic,” says Guay. “The Warlock class is centered around magic, and we wanted to truly represent that in the game. It’s incredibly fun to be creative with magic – manipulating elements, interacting with the world, and gaining an advantage over monsters.”

A Balance of Light and Shadow

While Warlock embraces a darker tone, it also promises moments of levity and charm. The game’s trailer features music reminiscent of Tool, hinting at a more mature and atmospheric experience. However, the developers assure players that the journey won’t be relentlessly grim.

“It’s definitely a dark fantasy game,” says Hattem, “but there are moments of lightness, vibrancy, and color. We’re going to Darkon, which is a vast and open world with a lot to discover. You’ll meet a wide range of characters, from the chaotic and cheerful Taasha to more brooding figures. There’s a real variety of tones in this game; it’s not just one thing.”

A Gateway for Newcomers and Veterans Alike

Warlock aims to be accessible to both newcomers and seasoned D&D veterans. The developers are confident that Kaatri will serve as an excellent entry point for those unfamiliar with the lore, while experienced players will find plenty of Easter eggs and references to reward their knowledge. “If you’re looking for a D&D experience in a familiar action-adventure format, this is it,” concludes Guay.

Scheduled for release in 2027, Warlock boasts an impressive cast, including Tricia Helfer (Battlestar Galactica) as Kaatri and Maggie Robertson (Baldur’s Gate 3) lending her voice to the project. Get ready to embrace the darkness and experience a new chapter in the D&D saga!
