Warhammer Blood Bowl Replaces Blood Bowl 3: Here’s What Happens to Your Unspent Warpstone

Games Workshop’s fantasy football phenomenon is getting a fresh start, and players with unspent in-game currency have a clear answer to their most pressing question. Slitherine has confirmed that anyone holding leftover Warpstone—the virtual currency powering Blood Bowl 3—will not lose it when the game’s successor, Warhammer Blood Bowl, launches later this year. The studio behind the transition made its position explicit after community members raised concerns about whether they should spend now or save for the sequel.

Blood Bowl 3, the latest video game adaptation of Games Workshop’s tabletop fantasy football title, featured an in-game store where Warpstone could be spent on cosmetics and new teams. Now being published by Slitherine rather than previous publisher Focus Home Interactive, Warhammer Blood Bowl is currently in beta and is set to eventually replace its predecessor once it fully launches.

A free upgrade with a transferred account

The core of the transition rests on a straightforward promise from the new publisher. Slitherine has stated that anyone who owns Blood Bowl 3 will receive Warhammer Blood Bowl for free, with their existing account transferring over seamlessly. This means progress, purchases, and accumulated currency all follow players into the new game rather than being left behind.

“Players will use the same BB account on both games, so they will instantly get all cosmetics, warpstones and teams they bought in BB3, into WH BB,” a Slitherine representative told Gamer24h. The statement removes much of the anxiety that often accompanies game transitions, where players fear their investments evaporating overnight.

Should you spend your Warpstone now?

While there is no urgent need to blow through your Warpstone out of fear it will vanish, Slitherine acknowledged that those with a substantial balance might find value in splashing out on a team before the switch. The representative confirmed that Warhammer Blood Bowl retains Warpstone as a method for purchasing cosmetics—but left one critical question deliberately open.

“We are still thinking about how to handle Teams.”

This ambiguity has reignited speculation among the community. With team unlocking mechanics still undecided, some players wonder whether Warhammer Blood Bowl might revert to the model used in its predecessor, Blood Bowl 2, where additional teams were sold as downloadable content rather than unlocked through gameplay or currency.

The beta experience

Warhammer Blood Bowl is currently undergoing playtesting ahead of its full release. Players interested in getting a hands-on look can request access through the “Request Access” button on its official store page, where the community has been evaluating both refinements and new features.

Early impressions highlight quality-of-life improvements that address long-standing complaints from the Blood Bowl 3 player base. Notably, players can now save and quit matches mid-game—a small but significant change for those juggling busy schedules—and a brand-new seven-a-side Rumble Mode offers faster, more compact games for those seeking a quicker match.

Other subtle touches have also drawn praise during the beta phase, including an icon in the user interface that can be hovered over to reveal the effects of current weather conditions. While seemingly minor, these environmental details add a layer of tactical depth that mirrors the real tabletop game.

Looking ahead

With Warhammer Blood Bowl still in beta and slated for release later this year, Slitherine has work to finalize before the doors fully open. The studio’s decision to preserve players’ Warpstone and cosmetics demonstrates a commitment to rewarding its existing community through the transition, even as it reshapes how teams are unlocked going forward.

The remaining question of team acquisition remains unresolved, leaving fans watching closely for further clarification from Slitherine. Until then, those with a healthy Warpstone balance can enjoy knowing their savings will carry over—whether they choose to spend them now or hold tight until Warhammer Blood Bowl officially launches.
