Wardogs Surpasses Arc Raiders and Helldivers 2 on Steam, Out-earning Marathon Across All Platforms

A tactical first-person shooter called Wardogs has surged past two of the biggest live-service hits of recent years on Steam, according to fresh sales data. Bulkhead’s breakout title released into early access on September 10 and has now sold an estimated 2.2 million copies on Valve’s platform, edging out Arc Raiders (1.7 million) and Helldivers 2 (1 million) at the moment their launches aligned. The game has also reportedly generated around $70 million in revenue on Steam alone, surpassing what Bungie’s Marathon has earned across both PC and console to date, according to analysis by Rhys Elliott of Alinea Analytics.

The momentum was immediate. Wardogs hit a peak of 428,666 concurrent players shortly after launch, quickly making it one of the most-played titles on Steam. It cleared 1 million copies on day one and 1.25 million by day two, with the figure climbing steadily since. Elliott’s data places the game at 2.2 million copies sold, a benchmark that has drawn comparisons to the sustained long-tail performance enjoyed by Helldivers 2 and Arc Raiders, both of which continued to sell millions of units months after their debuts.

Community Over Budget

What has most struck analysts is the financial efficiency of the release rather than its raw scale. Wardogs is a $40 title aimed at a niche, tactical shooter audience, and Elliott argues the pricing has proven decisive. “It’s another reminder that, when it comes to live-service games, community trumps budget and pedigree,” he said. The price point, he noted, appears to have hit “the modern pricing sweet spot, sitting below the friction point of a $70 AAA release while capturing that chunky volume of players priced out of premium titles.”

“You can’t really replicate what Bulkhead pulled off here, but they knew exactly who the game was for, priced it fairly, built the community before launch (and actually talked to them), cut the PR nonsense, were authentic (to a fault at times), and made something cool.”

The cautionary note, however, remains that the game faces a crowded horizon. With Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 and Grand Theft Auto VI both approaching, Wardogs has a long way to travel before matching the enduring sales of its rivals. Its status as an early access title, which it is expected to remain in for one to two years, also means the full picture is still being written. A console version is planned for 2028, and the studio’s Steam page reads: “We are adamant that we do not want to be in Early Access for a long time.”

Maintaining Momentum

Elliott cautioned that the title still has work to do before it can aspire to the heights of a Helldivers 2. “Wardogs’ growth story is far from over,” he continued. “It’s got some maintenance hills to climb and a strong roadmap to deliver on before it can dream of reaching the heights of, say, an Arc Raiders.”

That roadmap is already in motion. Overnight, Bulkhead boss Joe Brammer announced that Season 2 would bring “lots of new content and changes” as the game enters its next phase of development. Meanwhile, user reviews have shifted to “Very Positive” after initial complaints surrounding launch-day problems appear to have settled, with players now engaging with the game and enjoying the experience. Several gameplay clips showcasing the title’s chaotic moments have gone viral, though some players are reportedly avoiding Wardogs’ Lonestar faction over a perception that they attract weaker competitors and lose the most matches.

Looking Ahead

Even in the most conservative scenario, Elliott concluded that Wardogs is already a significant success. “Make no mistake: even if it never sold another copy, Wardogs is already a huge success. It’s a $40 shooter aimed at a slightly unfashionable audience that stuck to its guns and turned out bloody great.”

For Bulkhead, the priority is clearly longevity over short-term spectacle. With Season 2 content arriving and a console launch pencilled in for 2028, the studio’s focus is on sustaining the community it cultivated before launch rather than chasing fleeting headlines. Whether Wardogs can translate its early-access surge into a lasting presence in an increasingly competitive market remains to be seen, but the numbers so far suggest the game has found its footing at exactly the right price.
