A Valve developer accidentally referenced the long-rumored codename for Half-Life 3 during a recent conference.

For years, fans have wondered whether Half-Life 3 would ever be released. During the 2010s, hope for the sequel was kept alive by devoted fans, but it was later revealed that Valve had quietly shelved the project. Hope was reignited when Valve released Half-Life: Alyx, which ended on a major cliffhanger that seemed to set up Gordon Freeman’s next adventure. Since then, rumors of a third game have circulated, with various dataminers discovering references to a project called “HLX” in Valve-related files. HLX has long been assumed to be Half-Life 3, as no one has been able to connect it to any other existing Valve project—and the acronym itself strongly suggests a Half-Life connection.
Valve has now acknowledged the project, though unintentionally. During a recent Q&A panel at GameSoundCon, a conference focused on video game audio, Valve music designer Mike Morasky was explaining how the studio handles certain sound systems, noting that Deadlock uses a particular type of high dynamic range audio—and that HLX uses its own kind of HDR.
We have the first mention of HLX by a Valve employee.

Once the word HLX left Morasky’s mouth, he essentially stopped talking. Whether he had simply finished his thought or realized he should stop is unclear. A colleague seated beside Morasky quietly said “nice work,” which some fans interpreted as a passive-aggressive jab at his slip-up. Fans reacted enthusiastically to the small but notable mistake. Some embraced it, feeling their theories had been vindicated by the mention.
Regardless, this seems to confirm that HLX is a project still actively in development at Valve. We can only hope it is the long-rumored Half-Life 3, but it is unknown how far away an announcement—or a release—might be. Half-Life: Alyx had an exceptionally fast turnaround between announcement and release, so a similar pattern could emerge here. If so, fans might hope to see it at The Game Awards, though that remains a long shot.
