The Treaty of the Straits, or the Treaty of Istanbul, is a secret agreement signed between the Triple Entente during World War I on March 18, 1915. According to the treaty, the Bosphorus and Dardanelles, including the capital of the Ottoman Empire, Istanbul, were left to Russia.
The Treaty was signed to enter into force if Britain won the Battle of Çanakkale, but the treaty remained in force due to the defeat of the war. In addition, the Treaty was announced to the public following the October Revolution in Russia in 1917, when the Bolsheviks took power and withdrew from the war, but the British and French parties denied the existence of such a treaty, claiming that it was fabricated by the Bolsheviks.
