According to a report by GI.biz, Ubisoft has announced its “proposal” to close Finnish studio Ubisoft RedLynx, the long-time creators of the Trials series of motorbike stunt games. The move is part of the publisher’s ongoing restructuring of its worldwide network of development teams into so-called creative houses.

The announcement also affects Ubisoft Singapore, where 70 positions have been impacted “to align the studio with upcoming production needs,” per GI.biz. That team was responsible for Skull and Bones, which cost an estimated $200 million to develop and flopped critically and commercially in 2024.

Closing RedLynx is more complicated than some of the studios Ubisoft has shut down over the past year. Finland’s “change negotiations” or “co-operation negotiations” laws legally require employers to consult with employees before layoffs and major company changes. Because closing the studio—which Ubisoft acquired in 2011—falls under those categories, the law requires such actions to be “anticipatory,” meaning an employer must begin negotiations before deciding on the outcome. That is why Ubisoft describes the closure as a “proposal” at this stage.

RedLynx was already significantly reduced in 2025 when Ubisoft laid off more than half its workforce, and announced that the remaining team would focus solely on mobile games. According to VGC, Ubisoft’s stated reason for closing RedLynx and terminating its 52 staff is that “it’s not currently working on a new project, and because resizing alone wouldn’t keep it sustainable.”

In the seven years since the last Trials release, the studio helped Massive Entertainment port The Division 2 to Google’s Stadia streaming service in 2020, and released the free-to-play match-3 game Gwen’s Getaway in 2023. That title was taken down after about a year before ever reaching a finished version.

The question of what this means for the Trials franchise remains open. The studio has gone seven years without a new entry, and it is unclear whether RedLynx’s closure ends the series permanently. Ubisoft was contacted for more details.

All at sea

The Singapore studio was originally created as one of Ubisoft’s international support teams, working on colossal AAA games led by other studios. It eventually took on the task of developing Skull and Bones, an 11-year development that never came together and released to negative reviews and poor sales.

The studio then led the more successful Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, which sold more than 3.5 million copies in its first two weeks.

None of this piecemeal restructuring appears to be restoring investor confidence. Ubisoft’s share price, worth €84 in 2021, crashed to €3.84 in March 2026 and has hovered around €5 since—a roughly 95 percent collapse from its 2018 peak of €100 per share.
