Ubisoft reportedly issued a copyright strike against a YouTube video displaying an unused, unfinished epilogue cutscene datamined from Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced. The scene appears to show protagonist Edward Kenway talking with a character who is later killed at the start of Assassin’s Creed 3, and could be read as hinting at potential new adventures set in the first half of the 18th century.

The discovery is attributed to an Assassin’s Creed modder known as Sliderv2. The video they posted was not watchable, with YouTube showing it had been “removed following a copyright removal request by Ubisoft,” while a related Reddit thread had also been taken down “by Reddit’s filters.”

According to reports from Kotaku and Insider Gaming, the short scene shows Black Flag protagonist Edward Kenway talking in a tavern with a character called Miko. She is described as a leader of the British Assassin Brotherhood who ends up killed by Haytham Kenway—Edward’s Templar son and father of Assassin’s Creed 3 protagonist Connor—early on in that game.

The scene reportedly begins with Miko alluding to the death of a king, which readers reading into it assume may refer to George I of Great Britain dying in 1727. That year falls between when Black Flag and its expansion Freedom Cry are set. Miko and Edward then appear to discuss calling for help from assassins across the world, with the suggestion that Adéwalé—the Freedom Cry protagonist who served as Kenway’s quartermaster for most of Black Flag—would respond.

Speculators see this as a possible hint at further AC content, either an expansion or a new game, which could fill gaps around Edward Kenway’s post-Black Flag life not already covered by existing titles and the 2012 tie-in novel Assassin’s Creed: Forsaken. Edward is killed in 1735, so his story concludes before AC3 begins in 1754 and before Assassin’s Creed Rogue‘s events starting in 1752.

His time in England from 1725 until his death may represent unexplored territory, unless it has already been filled by something like the South Korean-focused webtoon comic series Assassin’s Creed: Forgotten Temple, which reportedly gives Kenway a new adventure in Southeast Asia after Black Flag.

The reporter asked Ubisoft for comment on the matter.

To this writer, it is equally possible that the alleged extra scene was simply bonus easter eggery or fan service that Ubisoft chose to drop, possibly out of concern that it might lead people to assume more 18th-century AC games were in development.

A review of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is available if the game remains on a reader’s list before year’s end.
