Twitch’s head of games, Dan Clancy, has predicted a monumental launch for Grand Theft Auto VI this November and warned that other video game companies would be wise to steer clear while Rockstar Games commands the spotlight. Speaking to Bloomberg in a conversation about the upcoming open-world title, Clancy revealed that he had engaged directly with Rockstar about its roadmap, anticipating not only a massive initial burst of attention but an even larger wave when the studio’s multiplayer mode—dubbed GTA Online 2 by fans—arrives next year.
“We spent a lot of time talking with Rockstar about their plans, and also helping them think about how they can engage our creators,” Clancy said. “You are going to see this big bump with GTA 6, but then an even bigger one next year when they launch multiplayer.” The comments underscore the immense pressure that lands on competing studios releasing titles in the same window, as Twitch’s platform is likely to absorb a disproportionate share of streaming attention during Rockstar’s marketing campaigns.
A Multiplayer Mode Still Shrouded in Mystery
The uncertainty has not dampened enthusiasm among content creators and viewers alike. As Rockstar continues to drip-feed information through additional screenshots and trailers, the streaming community remains poised to mobilize on an unprecedented scale once details materialize.

Will GTA Online 2 Replace GTA Online?
One of the most pressing questions facing longtime players is whether a new multiplayer entry will render the existing GTA Online obsolete. According to Strauss Zelnick, chairman and CEO of Rockstar’s parent company Take-Two Interactive, that is unlikely to be the case. Zelnick pointed to the studio’s treatment of NBA 2K Online as evidence that legacy titles can coexist with their successors.
“I’m going to speak theoretically only because I’m not going to talk about a particular project when an announcement hasn’t been made. But generally speaking, we support our properties when the consumers are involved with those titles. As an example, we launched NBA 2K Online in China, I think originally in 2012 if I’m not mistaken. And then we launched NBA 2K Online 2 in China in 2017. If I’m not mistaken. We did not sunset Online 1. They both are still in the market and they serve consumers and they’re alive and we have this massive audience.”

Zelnick emphasized that the company has demonstrated a willingness to maintain older titles when communities remain engaged with them. That statement carries particular weight for GTA Online players, suggesting—though not confirming at this stage—that if fans continue investing their time and money into the current online experience, Rockstar will keep it running alongside any successor.

The Console-First Launch and Unconfirmed Cast
GTA 6 is launching on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S only, meaning PC players’ options are limited to joining the console community through cloud streaming or sticking with GTA 5 and GTA Online on their preferred platform. This console-first strategy adds another layer of complexity for a massive player base that has long awaited a PC release.

In a remarkable departure from past marketing practices, Rockstar has yet to confirm any of the game’s voice actors, prompting fans to attempt to identify the cast themselves. The identities of Jason and Lucia, the game’s dual protagonists, remain unknown—perhaps they will only be revealed when the game launches in November and the credits roll.
Looking Ahead
As Rockstar counts down to its highly anticipated November release, both creators and players await further confirmation on the multiplayer timeline and any official announcements regarding cast members. The streaming giant’s prediction of an even larger surge next year suggests that GTA 6’s influence will extend well beyond its initial launch, potentially reshaping how studios approach their own release windows for years to come.
