The Xbox Games Showcase surprised fans with a fresh announcement from Activision that veered away from the usual Call of Duty hype. The Microsoft‑owned publisher unveiled a brand‑new Spyro title, signalling the return of the beloved franchise that last saw a new entry nearly two decades ago.
In the teaser, Spyro sports a striking visual overhaul, with most of the footage rendered in cinematic quality. The trailer concludes with a brief gameplay clip captured on PC, hinting at the mechanics that will carry over to the upcoming console launch.
The project is being shepherded by Toys for Bob, the same studio behind the critically acclaimed Spyro Reignited Trilogy remasters that rekindled the original titles for a new generation of players.
“We are huge Spyro fans ourselves and we are so excited that ‘the adventure continues,’” said Paul Yan, Head of Toys for Bob. “I know the wait has been excruciating but we’re so thrilled to finally come out of stealth and confirm that a new Spyro game is indeed what we’ve been up to these past few years.”
As the trailer demonstrates, Spyro has evolved significantly since his earlier escapades, gaining enhanced flight capabilities. Players will now experience full‑scale aerial freedom throughout the game, a first for the series beyond isolated mini‑levels.
According to Yan, the upcoming game Spyro: A Realm Beyond will offer players the exhilarating experience of true dragon flight, as Spyro, despite his diminutive size, exhibits remarkable strength. To achieve this balance between agility and physicality during flight, the studio undertook a series of experiments.
The game promises to revive the enchanting realms that players can explore, filled with hidden treasures and engaging activities. A new adversary is also set to disrupt the tranquility of this world. Notably, Tom Kenny will reprise his role as the voice of Spyro.
Spyro: A Realm Beyond is slated for release in Spring 2027, spanning multiple platforms including PC, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and the anticipated Nintendo Switch 2.
