As AI continues to exert a growing influence over the gaming industry, concerns have emerged in some quarters about how people might use AI to reverse-engineer games, including for upcoming titles that have not yet been released.

This became a particular talking point a couple of weeks ago when Moonlighter developer Digital Sun Gry decided to delay a planned PC playtest for its upcoming game ReVamp, worrying that the code might be reverse-engineered before it had a chance to release the full game.

Here is what it had to say in a statement at the time:

This ended up sparking a whole range of discussion about developers that might choose to adopt the same strategy, potentially opening the door to a future where demos and trials for upcoming games become less prominent.

Some even took it further, suggesting that reverse-engineering will push the industry toward a cloud-focused future:

A few people pushed back in the comments, arguing that games have still been successful despite the existence of piracy and other threats to their potential over the years, while others highlighted that stronger protections in the future may be able to limit the damage from reverse-engineering situations.

For what it’s worth, it has been reported in recent days that Claude has begun blocking attempts to clone and reverse-engineer games, and it was confirmed by an Anthropic developer that the idea is to “steer it away” from recreating other developers’ titles, because infringing intellectual property is against the company’s usage policy.

Ultimately though, it is too early to know what the future holds, but it is an interesting topic of discussion at the very least. Don’t be surprised if instances like this still crop up, and hopefully it is something that Xbox is actively thinking about.

What do you think this will lead to, and how would you handle it as a developer? Let us know down below.
