A Self-Taught Artist from Campania

Toni Servillo, whose full name is Marco Antonio Servillo, was born on 25 January 1959 in Afragola. He is an Italian actor and theatre director. According to the source, he was born in Afragola, in the province of Naples, and grew up in Caserta, spending his first four years of life in Arquata Scrivia, in the province of Alessandria. He is the brother of the singer Peppe Servillo, a member of the Piccola Orchestra Avion Travel group.

The source describes Servillo as a self-taught artist. He became passionate about theatre from a young age, in a family environment where theatre as a profession did not exist but where family members loved it. He began acting at the Salesian oratory in Caserta, before moving to stage performances during his adolescence.

Theatre and Lyrical Opera Work

During the years known as “Postavanguardia Teatrale” (Post-Avant-Garde Theatre), Servillo joined in the founding of Teatro Studio in Caserta, alongside Matteo De Simone, Sandro Leggiadro, Riccardo Ragozzino and Nando Taccogna. Teatro Studio toured Italy and Europe until 1984, staging various plays.

In 1986, he became associated with the Fasso Movimento group and, through it, with director Mario Martone, with whom he would frequently collaborate. Together they founded Teatri Uniti, whose artistic direction Servillo currently directs. That same year, he won the Gennaro Vitiello Award for first place, for his one-act play Guernica, which he wrote, directed and starred in, “for his determined search for new languages with broad poetic meanings.”

The source notes that Servillo acted in the plays Ha da Passa a Nuttata and L’Impero della Ghisa by theatre director Leo de Berardinis in 1989 and 1991. He also directed Molière’s The Misanthrope and Tartuffe, which, together with Marivaux’s Le False Confidenze, formed a trilogy on French theatre, in which he worked with Cesare Garboli on the translations.

As a director of musical theatre (opera), he made his debut in 1999 with Vicente Martín y Soler’s Una Cosa Rara, staged for the La Fenice theatre in Venice. This was followed by Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro, Richard Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos and Rossini’s The Italian Girl in Algiers. He also appeared as an actor in theatre productions directed by figures such as Memè Perlini, Mario Martone and Elio De Capitani.

Film Career and Sorrentino Collaboration

According to the source, Toni Servillo entered film in the 1990s through the films of Mario Martone. In 2001, he began his artistic collaboration with Paolo Sorrentino in L’Uomo in Più. In 2005, his performance in Paolo Sorrentino’s The Consequences of Love earned him the David di Donatello Award for Best Actor and a Nastro d’Argento (Silver Ribbon).

In 2008, he won the David di Donatello Award for Best Actor again for Andrea Molaioli’s Girl by the Lake. That same year, he demonstrated his talent once more through his performances in Matteo Garrone’s Gomorra and Sorrentino’s Il Divo, both of which received the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival, winning the European Film Award for Best Actor for these roles.

In 2009, his performance as Giulio Andreotti in Paolo Sorrentino’s Il Divo earned him his third David di Donatello Award for Best Actor. The source notes that through The Consequences of Love, Girl by the Lake and Il Divo, he won the Nastro d’Argento Award for Best Actor in 2005, 2008 and 2009 respectively.

Awards and Recognition

The source reports that throughout his career, Toni Servillo was awarded four David di Donatello Awards, one Volpi Cup and five Nastro d’Argento (Silver Ribbon) Awards. In 2020, The New York Times included him on its list of “the best actors of the century.”

Among his honours, the source lists the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic, Third Class (Commander), in 2014. His David di Donatello Awards for Best Actor came in 2005 for The Consequences of Love, 2008 for Girl by the Lake, 2009 for Il Divo and 2014 for The Great Beauty. The European Film Awards for Best Actor came in 2008 for Gomorra and Il Divo, in 2013 for The Great Beauty, and in 2026 for La Grazia.

The source also records that in 2013, Servillo received a special Nastro d’Argento for Bella Addormentata, Viva la Libertà and The Great Beauty, and a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2020. Regarding The Great Beauty, the source notes that it won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2014 ceremony, along with a Golden Globe; Servillo was in Los Angeles on 2 March 2014 to accompany Paolo Sorrentino and Nicola Giuliano when the award was received.
