Tomorrow marks a significant milestone in the Marathon series as season two, titled Nightfall, launches. This exciting event offers a plethora of reasons for players across the board to participate.
In season two, players who wish to start anew will experience the first inventory wipe in the extraction shooter game. Additionally, Bungie is introducing an experimental PvE-centric mode as part of a free-to-play week from June 2 to 9. This move aims to address various pieces of feedback received.
The new mode, named Sponsored Survival, takes place on the newly introduced map Night Marsh. Initially, only one crew will spawn with Sponsored Kits. As Bungie explained, “Players can explore, loot, and use flashlights without fear of retaliation from PVP enemies, but beware, the UESC and new shadowy enemies are still present.”
However, a twist is introduced: “After a certain duration, backfilled Rooks can enter the map and embark on their own scavenging expeditions,” Bungie revealed. “These newcomers may choose to operate independently or collaborate with the existing crew or other Rooks—the ultimate goal being survival, and the means being left to player discretion.”
In each thrilling encounter, the matches will endure for a span of 18 minutes, with the sole means of survival being the utilization of the final exfil. The crew and Rooks will find themselves either engaged in fierce combat or engaging in negotiations to ensure their safety. This fresh take on the extraction formula piques my interest.
Bungie describes this asymmetrical mode as a dynamic shift in the course of a run, providing a temporary reprieve for the lone crew during the initial minutes of the match, while preserving the unpredictable social element that Rooks introduce to runs. I am eager to give it a try.
Although this mode is experimental, Bungie intends to gather feedback on its reception. One constant feature will be the provision of progress and inventories for free-to-play players during the game’s Open Play Week, should they opt to purchase the full version. This ensures that all players can participate in the excitement.
Tomorrow, June 2, marks the launch of this new mode, where crews, including the newly introduced Sentinel Runner Shell, will face an army of Rooks. After a month-long hiatus, I am already eager to dive back into the action.
