Television’s biggest night of the year is underway as the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards get under way tonight at the Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles, with winners being announced live starting at 5pm PT / 8pm ET. The ceremony will stream on Peacock and air on NBC, hosted by Law & Order: SVU’s Mariska Hargitay — who herself picked up two Emmys for her documentary My Mom Jayn at last weekend’s Creative Arts Emmys. So far the drama categories have dominated the scoreboard, with Tom Pelphrey taking home Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for Task and Noah Wyle winning Lead Actor in a Drama Series for The Pitt.
The Television Academy trimmed its main broadcast this year, cutting five categories — including Writing for a Variety Series, Supporting Actor and Actress in a Limited Series or Movie, Directing for a Limited Series or Movie, and Writing for a Limited Series or Movie — from the primetime telecast. Those honors were folded into the Creative Arts Emmy Awards that took place over the weekend, reportedly an effort to keep the main show from stretching past three hours.
Drama Takes Early Command
The drama side of the room has been in full control as the evening’s first wave of results rolled in. Tom Pelphrey beat out a stacked field — including Patrick Ball, Billy Crudup, Shawn Hatosy and Gerran Howell from The Pitt, Jack Lowden (Slow Horses), Carlos-Manuel Vesga (Pluribus) and others — to win Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for his work on Task. In the lead actor category, Noah Wyle claimed the top prize for The Pitt over Sterling K. Brown (Paradise), Gary Oldman (Slow Horses), Mark Ruffalo (Task), Rufus Sewell (The Diplomat) and others.
The reality competition field was won by The Traitors on Peacock, edging out Dancing With the Stars (ABC), RuPaul’s Drag Race (MTV), Survivor (CBS) and Top Chef (Bravo). Comedy support categories also went to newcomers: Stephen Root took Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for Widow’s Bay over Colman Domingo, Paul W. Downs, Harrison Ford, Nick Offerman, Michael Urie and Tyler James Williams.

Rhea Seehorn won Lead Actress in a Drama Series for Pluribus ahead of Carrie Coon (The Gilded Age), Chase Infiniti (The Testaments), Keri Russell (The Diplomat) and Zendaya (Euphoria). Allison Janney took Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for The Diplomat, while Jean Smart claimed the comedy lead actress prize for Hacks. Kate O’Flynn won Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for Widow’s Bay.
