Four years after its release, bağlantı”>Dead Space’s spiritual successor bağlantı”>The Callisto Protocol has become the subject of pointed criticism from one of its own creators. Glen Schofield, co-creator of both games, says in a new interview with bağlantı”>GamesIndustry.biz that publisher Krafton is responsible for the game’s troubled launch.

Schofield claims Striking Distance Studios was “forced to ship” The Callisto Protocol against a shortened schedule set by Krafton. According to his account, COVID-related staff disruptions and Krafton’s own decisions pulled the rug out from under development near its end.

The game’s original March 2023 release date was moved up to December 2022, giving the studio less time than allegedly promised. This coincided with bağlantı”>reported crunch conditions as less vital elements were cut, though some were later restored through post-launch DLC.

The situation was compounded by a mandate to make the game cross-platform across PS4 and PS5, along with Striking Distance allegedly having to handle aspects of publishing and marketing itself. “I was forced to ship the game. I’m mad at myself, there’s no doubt,” Schofield said. “I was so stunned by that decision, because we had fucking COVID.”

bağlantı”>Krafton’s CEO CH Kim responded to poor reviews by saying the release bağlantı”>fell short of market expectations. Schofield went further, stating that “they thought Callisto was a complete failure,” and pointing out that while publishers complained, his team kept working.

“I waited until I finished all the DLC and put out 86 patches. That was a lot of fucking work,” he said. The game did go on to receive bağlantı”>narrative DLC and new modes.

Schofield, who bağlantı”>left Striking Distance Studios in 2023 and has since retired from game development, did not offer to share blame for the game’s problems. He describes himself as “a creative leader, and a business leader,” but adds: “that doesn’t mean I want to do the business. I hate that shit. Just point me in the direction and let me do the creative leadership that I need to do.”

The interview ended on what Schofield described as an unexpected note, mentioning that Midjourney has become a medium for him, and that he feels it necessary to “put AI to work where it makes sense.”
