Since Sean Connery immortalized Ian Fleming’s iconic spy on screen in 1962’s Dr. No, the role has become one of the most coveted – and scrutinized – assignments in Hollywood. From Roger Moore’s playful charm to Daniel Craig’s gritty realism, each actor has left their indelible mark on the character. Now, with Craig having hung up his Walther PPK after 2021’s No Time to Die, the hunt for his successor is officially underway.
The Villeneuve Era Begins
The next installment in the Bond franchise, tentatively dubbed “Bond 26,” will be directed by Denis Villeneuve, a visionary filmmaker known for his atmospheric thrillers like Blade Runner 2049 and Dune. Nina Gold, a seasoned casting director with credits spanning from The Queen to Bridgerton, is spearheading the search for the next cinematic icon. While Amazon remains tight-lipped about its frontrunners, a recent report from Page Six has sent ripples through the industry, revealing a shortlist of potential candidates.
According to sources close to the production, screen tests are slated to begin in early September. The reported list includes both relatively unknown talents and established A-listers, each bringing their unique qualities to the table.
The Contenders: A Diverse Field
One name that has surprised many is Jack Barton. While perhaps not a household name yet, Barton’s recent roles in Netflix’s Heartstopper and Steven Knight’s SAS: Rogue Heroes, where he played real-life SAS soldier John Tonkin, have showcased his versatility and intensity. He also had a minor role in Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things. His relative anonymity could be a significant asset, aligning with the long-standing tradition of casting actors who embody the enigmatic nature of James Bond.
The other contenders on the reported shortlist are more familiar faces. Jack Lowden, currently captivating audiences as River Cartwright in Apple TV Plus’ spy thriller Slow Horses, brings a grounded intensity to his roles. Callum Turner, fresh off his performance in the World War II miniseries Masters of the Air and that movie about the sex Purge, possesses both charisma and a brooding presence. Jacob Elordi, who has been one of the most frequently rumored choices for the role, has steadily transitioned from teen heartthrob to serious actor with roles in Euphoria, Priscilla and . He also stars as Heathcliff in the upcoming adaptation of Wuthering Heights and leads The Dog Stars, a post-apocalyptic drama that has received a divided critical response.
Paul Mescal, who built his reputation on emotionally intense performances, beginning with his breakout role as Connell Waldron in the miniseries Normal People, earned an Academy Award nomination for Aftersun. He also took on a much larger action role as Lucius in Gladiator II. Mescal also stars as William Shakespeare in Hamnet, a performance that has further strengthened his standing as one of his generation’s most acclaimed actors. He is set to play Paul McCartney in the upcoming Beatles biopic.
Harris Dickinson rounds out the reported shortlist. Dickinson has appeared in Triangle of Sadness, The Iron Claw, Where the Crawdads Sing and Babygirl, and played Prince Philip in the series A Murder at the End of the World. His résumé is perhaps less Bond-coded than Elordi’s or Lowden’s, but he has shown a similarly broad range across prestige dramas, thrillers and larger studio productions.
While Amazon has not officially confirmed any of these names, the anticipation surrounding the search for the next James Bond is palpable. The studio has assured fans that its quest for 007 is well underway, promising to reveal more information “as soon as the time is right.” The world waits with bated breath.
