We now have an official, confirmed name for the object of our long-standing RPG longing: The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel. Publisher Bethesda unveiled the title in a short video this week, delivering the first substantial news about the upcoming game since its 2018 reveal.
Civilisations have risen and fallen since then. Stars have formed and burned out. We even (very nearly) got GTA 6. The announcement landed 15 years to the day after Skyrim launched, which is a sobering thought for anyone who remembers that day.
But it’s not just a subtitle. Ever since 1996’s The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall, the subtitles in this series have referenced the region where the game takes place. Lore experts will already recognise Sentinel as a city within the Hammerfell region where that ’96 game was set. The title, therefore, signals a return to Hammerfell, marking the first time the series revisits a previously featured locale.

Located southwest of Skyrim, Hammerfell is an absolutely vast and uniquely diverse area of the Elder Scrolls world map. The series’ Fandom page describes “vast jungles, wooded mountain ranges, subtropical grasslands, humid swamps, and arid deserts” — perhaps why Bethesda Game Studios chose it.
All of this lines up with earlier reports through 2026 about what BGS had planned. Those reports also suggested the game will touch on the history of the titular Elder Scrolls themselves.
And that’s it, for now. There’s no release date, nor any calendar dates to mark for the next PR update. We’d hope this name reveal indicates that further updates will arrive more frequently than every eight years, but to be honest, we need some time to contemplate that Skyrim was 15 years ago — so no rush.
