Since Xbox announced that physical disc-based games could be converted into digital licenses playable on both console and PC, I’ve been all-in on physical purchases.

I’ve always been an advocate for physical ownership, long before disc to digital, but the ability to buy a physical copy of a game and essentially turn it into a PC license – I’m even more so. Xbox’s disc to digital programme has got to be one of this console generation’s defining features, giving players a genuine reason to reach for games off the shelf, dust ’em off, pop them into the disc tray, and claim digital licenses in the process.

I was reminded of just how useful this could be not too long ago, when I was getting ready for a road trip to the Cotswolds and fancied playing something new. Capcom’s Onimusha: Way of the Sword was the latest major release, and after being impressed by how well the developer’s other game, Pragmata, played on Switch 2, I was ready to pull the trigger on a new cartridge.

There was just one problem: achievements. As much as I enjoy Nintendo, the lack of an achievement system is often enough to put me off buying a game there. So before committing to the Switch 2, I looked up whether Onimusha supported disc to digital. It did. I snagged it on Xbox, popped the disc into my Xbox Series X, claimed my digital license, and took the game away with me installed on my ROG Ally.

That experience has changed how I approach buying games. Titles I might have considered buying on Steam for M&K or on Nintendo Switch 2 for portability are now more likely to end up in my Xbox collection instead. One purchase can give me access to the game on console, my higher-powered desktop PC, and my ROG Ally when I’m on the go – if it’s Xbox Play Anywhere supported.

Disc to digital also lets me keep growing my physical library without feeling like I’m sacrificing convenience. In a world where games can be pulled from marketplaces without warning, it’s really important to me. Xbox is really onto something here, and I hope it isn’t intended to just ease players towards an all-digital future with Project Helix, but instead to bring more PC players into the Xbox ecosystem. Right now, all that matters to me is that I get to buy physical games I own, and enjoy the flexibility of playing them across multiple devices.

This builds on something Microsoft has been working towards for years: letting players enjoy their games wherever they choose. Xbox Play Anywhere was a big step in that direction, an initiative that allows you to buy a supported game once and play it on both Xbox and PC. I’ve always loved the idea, but up until now, it only took into consideration digital purchases and Xbox Game Pass titles. Disc to digital opens up another route into that ecosystem. One that starts with a physical disc-based game.

The programme is still in its infancy. Disc to digital has only been publicly available since September, and support has expanded gradually, with the likes of SEGA and Ubisoft joining along the way. There’s well over 1,500 games that are now compatible, which is an encouraging start for the feature that might change how some of us buy our games.

You never know when you’re going to want to play an older game, and I’d much rather have it sitting on my shelf than rely solely on the Xbox Store.
