Valve has shipped a major update to its Steam client today, with Big Picture Mode receiving the brunt of attention. The most notable addition for the general public is that the screensaver feature for Big Picture Mode is now live.

In its default mode, the screensaver displays art from recently played games as well as any recent screenshots taken by the user. Players can also add their own custom screensavers.

The Steam client got a major new update today, with Big Picture Mode receiving the brunt of the attention… Valve also has “a retro inspired bouncing logo screensaver” which you can select in the new dropdown menu found under Settings / Customization. As the name implies, the Steam logo bounces around a black screen, changing color every time it hits an edge.

Valve has not made this screensaver the default option. According to the report, the bouncing logo is “a work of diabolical cruelty” that references the DVD Video screensaver built into many players in the late ’90s and early 2000s—a display where a logo bounces around a black screen, changing color on each edge collision.

The report notes this screensaver has “gone viral several times over the last decade or so,” to such an extent that searching for it online produces a bouncing Google logo in the search results. The defining feature of the display is the intense desire many people feel to see the logo perfectly hit the corner of a screen—an outcome reported as happening “extremely rarely.”

The author writes: “People say smartphone screens are ruining our lives… But at least they’ve saved us from the hypnotic tyranny of the goddamned bouncing DVD logo screensaver. Screw that thing.” After watching Valve’s version for about half an hour, the report concludes it is “pretty sure this abhorrent thing never pays out with a perfect corner-hitting moment,” advising readers not to turn it on even as a joke.

Beyond the screensaver, the update includes improved startup performance described only as “improved” to an unspecified degree. A new experimental video codec named Pyrowave has been added to Remote Play, which reportedly “allows high bandwidth, low latency video streaming.” Linux users also received additional tweaks and fixes.

The report says the focus of the update remains on minor improvements to Big Picture Mode, which it describes as good news for Steam Machine and Deck users. The full update notes are available in their entirety through the linked source.
