After spending a couple of weeks testing Valve’s $1,000-plus Steam Frame VR headset, GameSpot senior video producer Kurt Indovina has reached an unambiguous verdict: it is the best virtual reality headset he has ever used and possibly the last one he will ever need to buy. His hands-on evaluation was designed to answer a practical question that concerns many potential buyers—whether an entry-level VR budget can stretch past the four-figure mark, and whether spending that much on Steam Frame’s wireless standalone machine is genuinely worthwhile.

The conclusion, delivered through GameSpot’s review platform, lands firmly in favor of Valve. Indovina reported that the headset has proven itself across a range of experiences, from revisiting critically acclaimed titles to experimenting with lighter interactive content. His assessment carries weight given his long-standing relationship with the medium; he describes himself as an advocate for VR who has produced numerous videos on the subject over the years.

A Long-Time Advocate’s Verdict

“Having used this solid piece of tech for a couple of weeks now, it’s been great to replay things like Half-Life: Alyx or booting up Ghost Town, or fiddling around in Hot Dogs, Horseshoes, and Hand Grenades,” Indovina explained. The breadth of titles he cited spans narrative-driven blockbusters through playful social simulations, suggesting the headset can handle diverse genres rather than excelling at just one.

“It’s also been a time of reflection for VR as a whole, from where it started, where it went, and where it currently sits now. I’ve been an advocate for VR for a while. I’ve made plenty of videos about VR. In fact, the first GameSpot video I ever appeared in was for Five Nights at Freddy’s VR.”

Indovina did not shy away from the frustrations that have long plagued the industry, using his time with Steam Frame as a springboard to reflect on VR’s broader trajectory. He argued that several companies have stunted the medium’s growth and attempted to control the market through restrictive product strategies.

“But for all of the love I’ve given VR, my gripes with it seem to be never-ending. I’ve been very vocal about how companies have stunted the growth of VR and are trying to chokehold the market with their product. Meta putting out the most affordable and accessible headset only to commit, for lack of a better term, public suicide by investing everything into the metaverse, favoring a dystopian weird social life and alienating people who just want to play games.”

A Major Leap Forward for Valve VR

The Steam Frame is not Valve’s first venture into virtual reality hardware, but it represents a significant departure from the company’s 2019 Valve Index. Unlike that tethered system, the new standalone wireless headset delivers inside-out tracking, improved streaming support, onboard processing power, and Android compatibility—features that collectively mark what Indovina characterized as a major leap forward.

Despite these advances, it remains one of the pricier options currently available on the market. The Steam Frame still undercuts Meta’s most recent hardware effort, however. Facebook parent company Meta recently unveiled its new $1,300 VR Glasses in a flashy promotional trailer that conspicuously failed to mention virtual reality gaming as a focus.

For buyers with disposable income who care primarily about gaming, Indovina concluded that the Steam Frame is worth considering—provided they can actually secure one. Demand has been strong enough that units have sold out surprisingly fast since launch.

Looking Ahead

Before making a purchase, Indovina offered an important practical note for prospective buyers who wear glasses: it is essential to double-check the fit before committing to such an expensive piece of high-tech equipment. He warned against buying costly VR gear that ends up unusable simply because it does not accommodate eyewear.

“But if you look at the Steam Frame in a vacuum? ‘It rules,’ Indovina said, adding his confidence that the headset will eventually receive support for many other titles. “I’m sure this thing will get support for a lot of other cool games. It’s great.”

The review arrives at a pivotal moment for VR hardware, as the market navigates competing visions for its future and buyers weigh premium pricing against promised capability. Whether Steam Frame can sustain momentum beyond its initial sellout—and whether Valve can capitalize on Meta’s apparent distraction—remains to be seen.
