Steam has broken its all-time record for concurrent users, reaching 43,505,724 people logged in at the same time. According to a report by Eurogamer, drawing on figures from SteamDB, this marks the third time this year that the top figure has been smashed — having topped 42 million in January and added another half-million in March before breaking through the 43 million barrier for the first time in the service’s 23 years.

The record reflects accounts logged in simultaneously rather than people actively playing games. SteamDB recorded that 14.5 million were actually in-game when the peak was reached, another all-time high by roughly half a million more players.

Eurogamer reports the figures, which were picked up from SteamDB. Valve attributes the growth to a gradual accumulation of users rather than any single spike. The release of Gears of War: E-Day is said to have helped, with around 170,000 sales on Steam, while free-to-play MMO Aion 2 drew nearly 400,000 players across the week.

These join regular high-earners such as Dota 2 and Counter-Strike 2, which routinely exceed a million players, and PUBG with its usual 700,000. The remainder is spread across the 130,000 games currently available on Steam, a figure that rises by around 20,000 each year.

The numbers suggest Valve could make as much as $20 billion this year through Steam — more than the GDP of dozens of countries. Kotaku has helpfully suggested a few ways it could spend that money to improve things for developers and players alike.

Grim perspective

The record still falls short of some rivals. Roblox reported 123 million daily active users across its games in the second quarter of 2026, down from 152 million a year earlier but nearly triple Steam’s figure. Meanwhile, Fortnite alone matched Steam’s all-time highest number of in-game players with an all-time peak of 14.3 million in 2024 — though that has since collapsed, with this year’s Halloween event struggling to pull in 2 million midway through the month.

The comparison cuts both ways: Epic laid off 1,000 people this year, while Roblox reports a net loss of $185 million. Valve remains the financial winner regardless.
