Star Fox’s upcoming release on Switch 2, Nintendo’s Japanese website announced a mandatory update to enable certain features ahead of the game’s release.
As discovered by Nintendo Everything, the update will grant access to online Battle Mode; this mode supports 4v4 multiplayer air combat between Team Star Fox and Team Star Wolf.
The same page also states that the update is necessary to access the game’s GameChat character avatars and AR features; these features allow players to see Fox and the team’s appearance.
An active Switch Online membership is required to access online gameplay and GameChat. Previous Nintendo versions also required players to update and download the latest system firmware to enable and use online features.
Star Fox will be released digitally on Switch 2 on 25 June 2026 and will also be available in retail stores on the same day.
