Square Enix has officially announced that the definitive edition of Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age will launch on the Nintendo Switch 2 this September, following a rating preview that surfaced earlier in the year.

Analyse: The move underscores Nintendo’s strategy to keep its flagship RPG franchise fresh on next‑generation hardware, potentially boosting Switch 2 sales and reinforcing the platform’s appeal to long‑time RPG enthusiasts.

According to the Nintendo eShop, there will be no upgrade bundle to convert the current Switch version into the Switch 2 edition, a detail reiterated in the fine print at the bottom of the game’s store page.

The store’s disclaimer clarifies that the Switch and Switch 2 versions are distinct releases: players must choose the correct edition at purchase, and data saved on one system cannot be transferred to the other.

Square Enix’s Japanese website confirms that save files from the original Switch version are incompatible with the Switch 2 version, so gamers should carefully decide which platform to commit to before buying.

Gamers who already own the Switch version of Dragon Quest XI S will find that there is no paid upgrade path available. However, those who choose to purchase the title for the forthcoming Switch 2 can look forward to a suite of new optimisation modes that let them balance visual fidelity against frame‑rate performance.

In a notable development, the physical edition of the Switch 2 version will be released as a Game‑Key Card, a format that blends the convenience of a digital key with the tangible appeal of a collectible card.
