Sony Skips CES 2027 for First Time Since 1967, Pivoting Toward Entertainment-Focused Events

Sony is breaking a decades-long tradition. The Japanese conglomerate confirmed to Bloomberg that it will not attend the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January 2027, marking the first time the company has skipped the Las Vegas event since it debuted in 1967. The withdrawal means PlayStation fans should expect no direct PlayStation announcements from Sony at the tech giant’s annual trade show, as the company redirects its attention toward entertainment-first platforms.

The decision comes after what Sony described as a strategic evaluation of its approach to “events and communications based on the needs and priorities of our diverse business.” According to the company, it is now placing greater emphasis on “entertainment” — a category encompassing games, anime, films, and music — while CES remains primarily a technology showcase. The shift signals a broader recalibration of how Sony chooses to engage with audiences and media as it balances its sprawling portfolio across gaming, hardware, and content production.

A CES History Laced With PlayStation Moments

Sony’s presence at CES has long featured keynote addresses from executives and creative leaders discussing upcoming technologies and products. While the company never delivered its most momentous PlayStation reveals at the event, attendees and fans could always expect a trickle of news. The most memorable — and widely mocked — instance arrived in 2020, when then-PlayStation boss Jim Ryan revealed the PS5 logo. Fans, desperate for any morsel of news about the then-upcoming console, roasted Sony for offering little more than a badge, and the reveal became a cautionary tale of underwhelming announcements.

The moment, where everyone learned the logo would be “the most predictable logo ever,” has since become a cultural touchstone for how not to unveil a flagship product. The juicier details — the release date, price, and technical specifications — were wisely saved for dedicated system events.

By CES 2022, Sony had refined its approach, unveiling PlayStation VR2 alongside a new game for the headset, Horizon: Call of the Mountain. In more recent years, the company’s PlayStation-related CES appearances have leaned heavily on transmedia adaptations, including the announcement of both a Horizon movie and a Helldivers film, reflecting Sony’s growing ambitions beyond interactive entertainment.

How Other Console Makers Used CES

Sony is far from the only hardware maker to have leveraged the CES stage over the decades. Microsoft famously revealed the original Xbox with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson headlining the presentation at CES 2001, though the company never carried the tradition forward with similarly monumental Xbox reveals. Nintendo, meanwhile, has its own deep CES heritage, having unveiled the first version of the Nintendo Entertainment System at the 1984 show — where it was presented under the prototype moniker the Advanced Video System.

These historical footnotes underscore how CES once served as a launchpad for some of gaming’s most defining products, even if the show’s identity as a technology event has always sat somewhat awkwardly beside entertainment-focused reveals. Sony’s departure may accelerate that tension, as the line between consumer electronics and entertainment content continues to blur.

Looking Ahead

CES 2027 is scheduled to take place January 6-9 in Las Vegas, though Sony will not be among the exhibitors. For PlayStation enthusiasts hoping to catch the latest from the company, the absence from CES means attention will likely turn to Sony’s own dedicated events, where the bulk of its gaming reveals have increasingly been concentrated in recent years. As Sony doubles down on its entertainment strategy, the question remains whether the company will continue to stage its own high-profile showcases or lean even more heavily into the anime, film, and music ventures that now anchor its priorities.
