Sony appears to be leaving the UHD Blu-ray player market, having ended shipments of its UBP-X700/K device with no successor in sight.
If accurate, this would leave Panasonic as the only well-known consumer electronics maker still producing UHD Blu-ray players, though some Chinese firms are beginning to fill the gap.
Although the Japanese company has not issued a press release on the matter, blog and official Sony retailer Kunkoku reports that it has stopped shipping the aforementioned product.
This is reflected on the company’s own website, where the UBP-X700/K is currently listed as out of stock, with no plans to ship new units in the future.
Technically, the PS5 doubles as a UHD Blu-ray player as well, though the platform holder has clearly signalled its intention to stop shipping disc-based games in January 2028. It is unlikely the PS6 will ship with a disc drive.
None of this should come as a surprise, by the way — Sony has been shedding many of its consumer electronics products as it shifts further toward entertainment.
The market for standalone UHD Blu-ray players in 2026 is also likely to be vanishingly small.
If you want one of these, it does look like units are still available in Europe and the US, but you may need to act fast, as it doesn’t appear these will be restocked.
It’s possible Sony may announce a replacement product in the future, but given the direction things are heading, I wouldn’t hold my breath.
