Sega has drawn criticism from players who purchased the Deluxe Edition of Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, after revealing that upcoming year 2 downloadable content—including a Final Fantasy VII collaboration—will require additional payment.
The game’s year 2 DLC roadmap begins November 3 and was previewed over the weekend. It features crossovers with Godzilla, Evangelion, Virtual Sanrio Puroland, Segaland, plus the Midgar Pack and Reload Revival Royal. Each pack is expected to add new stages and character skins, with the full lineup costing players $40.
The backlash traces back to a tweet Sega posted ahead of Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds‘ launch in June 2025. “Pre-Orders for the Digital Deluxe Edition are now live!” it read (via TheGamer). “This edition includes: Base Game, Season Pass, All future paid downloadable content, Bonus Sonic Prime characters.”

The phrase “all future DLC” has become the point of contention. According to a report by Kotaku for gamer24h.com, some players argue this differs significantly from year 1 content alone.

The frustration extends beyond the FF7 announcement. One fan on the PS5 subreddit said: “It still pisses me off that the whole point of this game was that it was a crossover between different properties, but the game launched with only sonic characters and zero crossovers. They started slowly adding Sega ones, but charging extra for anything that wasn’t already a Sega character.”
DLC packs are typically priced at $6. The Godzilla pack arrives in early November, while Evangelion won’t come until the start of 2027. Timing for the Final Fantasy VII content remains to be determined.
