Sega and Creative Assembly have removed Total War: Shogun 2 – Complete Edition from sale, replacing it with the original 2011 version of the strategy game. The remastered edition had gone on sale on October 13.

The title was marketed as receiving a substantial facelift, but players quickly raised concerns about multiple problems with the release and its use of AI-upscaling graphics. Some of these produced odd visual results, such as a samurai’s face merging with his helmet or extra fingers appearing on character artwork.

Sega wrote in a statement that did not address the AI criticisms directly: “We’re aware that Total War: Shogun 2 – Complete Edition has fallen short of both your expectations and our own standards. We’ve seen your feedback, comments, and reviews. We agree that the current experience is not where it needs to be.”

Fans have also posted examples on social media of legacy bugs they say remain unaddressed in the new edition. Sega said it was “working closely” with its “development partners” to identify and fix these issues.

The game currently carries an overwhelmingly negative rating on Steam, where more than 81% of player reviews recommend against buying it. One review cited a specific example: “Horrific graphical bug makes the vegetation in battle map terrible to look at. There’s no way to disable the vegetation.”

Players were also unhappy when Sega initially swapped the original Shogun 2 for the remastered version, which is priced at $40. Upgrading from the classic edition to this version costs $10.

The AI-upscaling complaints are only part of a broader set of grievances. Players have criticized the new user interface as clunky and reported numerous other bugs in the release.

generative AI was used to create background assets for the upcoming Crazy Taxi: World Tour, another Sega-linked title.
