Warehouse retailers Sam’s Club and Costco have been heavily stocked with new Pokémon “Ascended Heroes” trading card products in recent weeks, offering savings well below typical market prices. However, the availability is unpredictable: both stores are releasing inventory at random times rather than on scheduled days.

The surge precedes the launch of the Pokémon 30th Anniversary collection, which is expected to dominate the trading card game market. Historically, tracking down “Ascended Heroes” cards has been far more difficult than sourcing other sets, largely due to the age of the release. Because recent Pokémon products make up most new distribution shipments, older sets have generally been harder to find.

There are two notable exceptions to this trend recently, but they require store memberships and patience to take advantage of.

Pricing Across Retailers

Sam’s Club has been stocking an exclusive “Ascended Heroes” Focused Fighters box featuring four promo cards and 14 packs for $54.98—roughly under four dollars per pack.

In contrast, at other retailers the same set costs significantly more. At stores like Target and Best Buy, customers pay between five and six dollars a pack for recent “Ascended Heroes” tins containing four packs. Local card shops are increasingly selling the same box at market prices, often double the manufacturer’s suggested retail price.

Mer recently, Sam’s Club customers have spotted drops for three different versions of an AH Elite Trainer Box bundled with an extra Poké Ball, totaling 12 packs for $54.76.

Costco Offerings

At Costco, there has also been a steady stream of “Ascended Heroes” drops. Some regions have received a five mini-tin bundle (10 packs total) for $76.49.

The warehouse retailer has also been stocking Elite Trainer Boxes of the set at $42.99—a rare instance where a Pokémon product is being sold below the manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $49.99.

Why the Random Drops

The savings are substantial, especially for those who already hold memberships to either store. The catch is that both stores sell these products randomly rather than all at once. A local store could have multiple pallets of “Ascended Heroes” on hand.

Data collected over weeks from restock Discord servers and Facebook groups suggests Sam’s Club and Costco are holding products at their discretion, making them available at arbitrary times throughout the day. Both stores are also receiving multiple shipment waves, some expected during the week of Oct. 12.

The practice appears designed to prevent scalpers from camping outside stores for days on scheduled drop days. Past releases have been plagued with issues such as fights and customers ignoring purchase limits. Even with the new system, scalpers are still likely to stake out stores for hours, and some resellers reportedly have inside contacts with workers who can alert them to drops.

How to Stay Informed

The best way to keep track of drops is to join a regional group on social media sites like Facebook. It is also advisable to stop at nearby stores when possible. As long as expectations are kept in check, shoppers may be surprised by what they find.
