Más than six decades after Charles Schulz first published it, Sally Brown’s declaration that “happiness is your own library card” remains one of the most enduring and quotable lines in the Peanuts comic strip.

The line appeared on April 26, 1963, and has since become a ready-made favorite for school walls and literacy drives. Among Sally’s many memorable moments—her windmill dunks on Charlie Brown and her one-sided crush on Linus—it stands out as perhaps her most iconic.

Sally, Charlie Brown’s younger sister, is best remembered by modern fans for her romantic pining over Linus and her repeated physical mishaps with Charlie Brown. But a reread of the strip reveals another defining trait: her antagonistic relationship with academia.

Patty

Sally serves as the patron saint of unwilling students in the Peanuts gang. While most of the other characters seemed content with their studies, Sally actively resented the burden of schooling—though not necessarily learning itself. She is just as prone to suddenly delivering graduate-level Biblical scholarship as her brother Linus.

Sally’s attempts to dodge schoolwork through bluffs, short cons, and clever turns of phrase have become legendary over the strip’s run, even if she never quite reaches the sharpness of someone like Calvin.

In a strip from June 11, 1987, Sally finds herself in the wrong. When she begins a letter by writing “Deer,” Charlie Brown attempts to correct her spelling. Instead of stopping, Sally continues with what appears to be the opening sentence of a term paper about deer.

“It seems to me that a lot of the problems in this world are caused by people who criticize other people before they know what they’re talking about!” she yells at Charlie Brown as he walks away.

Once Charlie Brown is gone, Sally begins the letter anew and writes “Dear Grandma,” exactly as he had suggested.

The strip offers a useful reminder for the internet generation: in an age where it is easy to dive into incomplete conversations without fully grasping what is being said, taking time before responding can help avoid embarrassment—even if, like Sally, you were technically wrong.
