Facing Games and Facepuppet Studios have released the long-awaited livestock update for Rust, the survival title that lets players build settlements, craft weapons and raid one another. The free content drop is now live across all platforms, introducing sheep and cows as breedable animals alongside new farming mechanics, dairy products such as milk and cream, wool production and a biofuel generator capable of turning spoiled or raw meat into low-grade fuel.

The update arrives just in time for the autumn season, giving players fresh reasons to establish farms between wipes. Sheep and cows sit at the centre of the new content, requiring owners to stock up on shears and milk buckets before settling down. Beyond producing dung, these animals yield milk and wool, resources that will prove useful as servers reset and communities rebuild from scratch.

Becoming a Farmer in Rust

Sheep and cows offer plenty of uses once tamed and kept on player land. As with any wild animal in the game, they can be butchered for meat, bones, leather and animal fat. However, new fence and gate blueprints allow players to construct proper farms where animals can be bred for dung, milk or wool, each serving a distinct purpose.

Dung already existed as a resource in Rust, primarily used to create fertilizer that helps plants grow while also being tradeable for scrap. Milk takes things further, offering options to drink directly or process into cream and skimmed milk. These dairy products enhance the duration and potency of pie and tea recipes when consumed by players.

Wool can be sold to vendors located at Stables, mirroring how livestock itself is traded. When players attempt to sell wool or live animals, vendors present a random offer that can be rejected up to three times. Once that limit is reached, the vendor becomes unavailable for trading for another fifteen minutes.

Breeding and Biofuel Mechanics

Breeding forms a significant portion of this update, with each creature carrying its own set of genes similar to plants. The genetic makeup of offspring depends on the parents’ traits, meaning careful selection can produce superior animals. For reproduction to succeed, players must keep their creatures safe and attend to their needs.

Animals with stronger genes command higher prices at vendors and generate goods more efficiently over time. Should a particularly unproductive breeding experiment arise, players may choose to butcher it rather than waste resources. The new biofuel generator addresses this scenario by converting animal meat—whether spoiled or raw—into low-grade fuel.

The livestock update lets you farm, breed and even turn your dead animals into fuel. You don’t see that in many farming sims.

The amount of fuel produced scales with the calorific value of the biological material fed into the generator, encouraging players to optimize their inputs. This system introduces a fresh loop around animal husbandry that extends well past simple resource gathering.

Cosmetics and Wildlife Additions

Beyond core gameplay systems, the update brings decorative wildlife scattered across different biomes. Players will encounter frogs, turtles, jellyfish, crabs and squirrels depending on their surroundings, adding life to the environment without affecting balance. These additions complement broader environmental improvements made alongside the farming content.

A new cosmetic DLC also accompanies the release: the Plague Doctor skin for the Hazmat Suit. The eerie outfit aligns with October’s seasonal spooky theme and is available through Plague Doctor DLC on Steam for $9.99.

Looking Ahead

The livestock update is now available to all Rust players at no additional cost, with farms ready to be established immediately upon login. Communities planning upcoming wipes can begin organizing their agricultural strategies around the new sheep and cow mechanics.

Players interested in the cosmetic Plague Doctor outfit can purchase it separately on Steam, while those focused on survival will find ample depth in breeding systems and biofuel production. As servers continue to cycle through wipes, these farming tools are expected to become staples of established settlements looking to streamline resource generation.
