Runescape’s developer Jagex has unveiled RuneScape Reignited, a new character type for the long-running MMORPG that offers players a fresh start with an isolated economy and no microtransactions—but its launch has reignited fierce debate among the game’s veteran community over fears it could split the player base in two.
The announcement, which arrived alongside a detailed developer blog this week, clarifies that Reignited is not a standalone remake or upgraded version of RuneScape 3 as some observers initially assumed. Instead, it functions as an alternate progression path within the existing RS3 framework, allowing returning and newcomers alike to begin their journey anew without the burden of two decades of accumulated content.
A Fresh Start with Isolated Progression
Under the Reignited system, all new characters will start from scratch with no prior progress, operating within a separate economy that does not intersect with traditional accounts. Players can choose to join existing worlds or venture into Reignited-exclusive servers, and crucially, Reignited and regular players remain able to socialize together and form clans.
The restrictions become apparent in more competitive spaces, however. Reignited characters cannot fight the same bosses as their counterparts nor trade items with them, creating a parallel ecosystem that mirrors the Ironman experience while remaining somewhat less isolated. Jagex has confirmed that once players select a character type, they cannot switch back or forth.
The developers have made clear there will be no new updates exclusive to Reignited characters, reinforcing that this is an invitation rather than a forced divergence for the broader game community.

Rather than representing a complete overhaul of the title, the initiative appears designed to lower the barrier to entry for prospective players wary of falling behind on twenty years of content. The announcement page specifically promises freedom from Treasure Hunter, the game’s controversial loot box system that was phased out at the start of this year.
Veterans Voice Concerns Over Fragmentation
The reaction among longtime players has been far less enthusiastic than Jagex may have hoped. Some community members have leaned into the drama with humor, taking to X (formerly Twitter) to mock the prospect of a Falador riot—the classic in-game protest mechanic—with one user jokingly rallying “All 100 RS3 players in attendance for the final riot to end all riots.”

Beyond the jokes, genuine concern lingers over whether the split will harm an already small player base. On the game’s official subreddit, user RiquaaLz articulated the anxiety shared by many: “What does everyone that has spent 1000s of hours gain by making a new account? Does this make all previous progress worthless,” they wrote, noting that group content is already difficult to assemble and fearing further fragmentation. That thread accumulated roughly 1,500 upvotes.
Others simply balked at the prospect of starting over entirely. “I am not starting over bruh this game is waaaay too grindy for that,” wrote user Last-Horror9563, capturing a sentiment echoed across multiple discussion threads.
A Calculated Gamble for RS3’s Future
Jagex has insisted in its dev blog that neither veteran nor Reignited characters will be favored by future design decisions, attempting to reassure skeptics that progress on traditional accounts retains equal value. Whether that promise holds weight with the community remains uncertain.
The timing of the move is significant as RS3 faces mounting pressure from multiple fronts. Old School RuneScape continues to expand its feature set and attract players, while speculation around a potential spiritual successor—dubbed RS4 by fans—looms on the horizon. Whether this gambit successfully resuscitates interest in the mainline title will only become apparent over time.
For now, Reignited stands as an ambitious experiment in offering renewal without erasure, balancing the appeal of a clean slate against the very real risk of dividing one of gaming’s most enduring online communities. Players can begin their renewed journey once the feature goes live, though exactly when that occurs has yet to be confirmed.
