The fallout from the recent, massive leak of Grand Theft Auto VI assets continues to unfold, with Rockstar Games’ parent company, Take-Two Interactive, taking legal action to identify the source. As first reported by Kotaku, a subpoena filed in New York reveals a concerted effort to track down those responsible for sharing copyrighted material from the highly anticipated game.
The Legal Pursuit: Microsoft and Discord Under Scrutiny
The subpoena, targeting both Microsoft and Discord, seeks extensive records related to the “cyberleek” persona. Take-Two is demanding all internal Microsoft business records and investigative findings associated with their investigation into this online identity. The goal is to uncover the user(s), person(s), and/or entity/ies linked to the cyberleek account. Meanwhile, Discord is being asked to provide identifying information for all user accounts that were members of specific servers between June 1st and the present day. This includes crucial data like account IDs, registration emails, IP addresses, phone numbers, linked accounts (Google, Xbox), device identifiers, and any content related to Grand Theft Auto, Rockstar Games, or cyberleek on OneDrive accounts.
The DarkViperAU Connection?
One of the Discord servers implicated reportedly belongs to Matthew Judge, an Australian GTA YouTuber and streamer known as DarkViperAU. Judge himself addressed the situation on Twitter, expressing confusion. “I am confused,” he wrote. “I did say he can’t drive multiple times, so maybe I caused him to write ‘Cyberleek can’t drive’ on the most recent clips? Maybe he visited my Discord, I dunno. Rockstar hasn’t emailed me, I suspect if they thought I knew something personally they would do so.”
Proceed with Caution
As of now, Rockstar Games and Take-Two have not issued any public statements regarding this legal action. For gamers, the safest course of action is to avoid downloading or sharing files claiming to be leaked GTA VI builds. The investigation is ongoing, and further details are likely to emerge in the coming weeks.
