The highly anticipated release of Grand Theft Auto 6 is looming, but a shadow hangs over it. Former Rockstar Games employees, allegedly fired in what many are calling a union-busting move, are now speaking out. Instead of urging fans to boycott the game, they’re asking for support in their ongoing legal battle against the company.
Support the Fight: Don’t Boycott GTA 6
In a recent video and social media post from the IWGB (Independent Workers Union of Great Britain), the fired workers made a powerful plea. “Don’t boycott GTA 6. Fight for justice for the people who made it,” the message read.
The union has launched a new initiative, offering supporters the chance to pre-order a special T-shirt. All proceeds from these shirts will go directly towards covering the legal costs incurred by the laid-off Rockstar developers.
“We spent years pouring our hard work, skill, and creativity making GTA, and we want people to experience the universe we helped build,” said the former developers in the IWGB’s video. “But that doesn’t mean we want you to let Rockstar off the hook.”
The Controversy: Union Busting Allegations
The situation began last year when 31 members of Rockstar Games were terminated for alleged “gross misconduct.” Crucially, all of those affected were active members of the union at the company. This has led to an employment tribunal between Rockstar and the IWGB, fueling accusations of union busting.
While the union’s popularity continues to grow, Rockstar itself vehemently denies any wrongdoing. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has even stated that he isn’t concerned about the legal battle impacting Grand Theft Auto 6 sales. The game, which became available for pre-order late last month, immediately shot to the top of the PlayStation Store charts worldwide.
