Robert Pattinson has openly questioned whether his dark, grounded take on Batman could ever coexist within James Gunn’s DC Universe, casting doubt on a potential crossover between the two actors’ characters. Speaking with LADbible, the actor suggested that transplanting his version of Bruce Wayne into Gunn’s more fantastical, lighter-toned multiverse would be difficult, even for himself. The comments arrive amid ongoing speculation about the future of the DCU and whether Pattinson’s Batman will ever appear alongside Gunn’s Superman.
The actor’s hesitation stems from the intense, immersive nature of filming his Batman films, which he described as an experience that seeps into him and lingers long after production ends. Pattinson noted that the specific tone of his films—built around darkness, both mood-wise and visually—becomes so ingrained that he struggles to imagine his character functioning outside that world.
A Tone Clash at the Heart of the Debate
Fans have been divided for some time over whether Pattinson should remain confined to his own corner of the multiverse or step into Gunn’s flagship DCU. The two universes operate under markedly different philosophies: Pattinson’s Batman is a gritty, noir-inspired detective story, while Gunn’s Superman is part of a broader, more mythic and hopeful vision of the DCU.
Despite the tonal divide, the current DCU does offer room for darker material. Lanterns, for example, demonstrates that a grounded and more mature story can still fit comfortably within the larger DCU. Next month, we’ll also get Clayface, an R-rated body horror film set in the same universe as Superman, Lanterns, and Supergirl.
“I think it would be kind of tough to have this version of Bruce outside of that world,” Pattinson said. “It’s one of the only characters, I guess because of the length of the shoots, but also it’s such a specific kind of [style], the tone of it gets inside you. I remember that happened to me the last time I did it, it took a while. You’re just in the dark, the whole time. Both mood-wise and light-wise, I can’t see anything for like months. It does affect you, like you feel strange afterwards.”

Looking Ahead
Perhaps one day the two Batmen will share the screen, but if Pattinson’s comments are anything to go by, it won’t be anytime soon. The Batman Part 2 hits theaters on February 18, 2027, while Man of Tomorrow, the sequel to Superman, will fly into theaters on July 9, 2027.
