The wait is finally over! Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy has arrived on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, offering a brand new chapter in the beloved franchise. At gamescom, we had the exclusive opportunity to speak with David Dedeine, co-founder of Asobo and game director, and Anna Demetriou, the incredibly talented voice actor who brings Sophia to life, about this exciting prequel.
A New Perspective on a Familiar World
This isn’t just another sequel; it’s a deep dive into Sophia’s past, exploring her journey to the Minotaur’s island and the devastating curse that awaits her. The story is intensely emotional, not only for players but also for Demetriou herself.
“Sometimes in acting, there’s a phrase about a character being ‘on center’ or ‘off center’ for the actor,” Demetriou explained. “For me, Sophia is very much ‘on center.’ She feels incredibly close to me. This made it easier to connect with her and portray her authentically. We also explored her backstory in detail, and understanding where she came from helps explain who she becomes in A Plague Tale: Requiem. Even without a sequel, her story feels complete.”
Demetriou, who credits Just Cause as an early title that helped her break into the gaming world, emphasized the collaborative spirit she shared with Carol Ann Bañuls, the lead writer on Resonance. “What was truly special about Resonance was that the original writer of Sophia’s character in A Plague Tale: Requiem wasn’t involved this time. We had Carol Ann Bañuls, who I connected with so well professionally and personally. It felt like a natural collaboration as I already knew the character, and she was bringing something new to the table.”
“We often found ourselves asking, ‘How can we blend what I know about this character with what you’re bringing?’ She was incredibly open to my input, always willing to hear my thoughts on lines and even experiment with different approaches. It’s not always common for actors to have that level of creative freedom, so it was a truly rewarding experience.”
A Fresh Start: Innovation and Familiarity
We also spoke with Dedeine about the challenges of crafting a prequel and how they aimed to strike a balance between honoring the original games and forging a new path.
“There were many considerations,” Dedeine admitted. “We knew we couldn’t simply rehash what came before, as Amicia and Hugo are no longer part of the story. We wanted to open up new possibilities, experiment with different tones, and give ourselves some ‘fresh air’ after seven years immersed in this universe. However, it was tricky to find that balance between innovation and staying true to the core elements that make A Plague Tale so special.”
One of the most significant changes players will notice is the absence of the iconic swarms of rats. Dedeine assures fans not to worry, as something equally sinister has taken their place.
“There’s something very special that replaces the rats, and in a much more dynamic way,” Dedeine teased. “It’s a big surprise we haven’t revealed yet, but I think it’s innovative and will be interesting to see how players react.”
