Capcom has long promised that Resident Evil Requiem will eventually receive a story expansion, and for months the studio shared little beyond that bare confirmation. Now, one of the game’s writers has finally begun to pull back the curtain. Speaking with the Distance Nerding podcast at Meadowlark Comic Con, Requiem writer Haris Orkin casually revealed new details about what players can expect from the eventual DLC — most notably confirming that the base game’s focus on series antagonist Oswell Spencer will continue in a way that may shed surprising light on an eventual Resident Evil 5 remake.

The revelations come as fans grow increasingly eager for any concrete information about Requiem’s post-launch plans. While Capcom has not set a release date or detailed the expansion’s content, Orkin’s comments suggest the DLC will deepen one of the game’s most intriguing narrative threads: the complicated redemption arc it gave to Spencer.

A Villain Reexamined

Franchise fans are intimately familiar with Oswell Spencer. The mansion at the heart of the first game is named after him, and he stands as one of the founding members of the Umbrella Corporation — the shadowy conglomerate responsible for unleashing much of the zombie plague that defines the series. For decades, Spencer has been portrayed as an unequivocally ruthless figure, ultimately meeting his end in Resident Evil 5.

Fans were surprised when Requiem resurrected Spencer through flashbacks suggesting he grew more repentant toward the end of his life than previously believed. According to Orkin, this characterization is no accident but rather part of a broader Capcom strategy for the franchise’s overarching narrative.

“There is an arc for Spencer in Requiem that helps you understand him, and in the DLC you will understand it even further.” I probably shouldn’t say that.

The writer’s quick follow-up — admitting he “probably shouldn’t say that” — only fueled speculation. The comments lend credence to rumors that players will return to the Spencer Mansion in Requiem’s DLC, possibly offering a fresh perspective on the events that led directly into the original 1996 game.

Implications for a Resident Evil 5 Remake

Spencer’s recharacterization in Requiem leans dangerously close to rewriting him entirely, and this creates an interesting continuity problem. The last time players see Spencer alive — during the Resident Evil 5 Lost in Nightmares DLC — he remains unrepentant about his actions. Those events occur after the flashbacks featured in Requiem, which now imply that Spencer harbored some desire to make amends for his wrongdoings.

This inconsistency positions Capcom at a crossroads. The studio could potentially use a Resident Evil 5 remake to streamline the series’ lore and reconcile these conflicting portrayals into a single, coherent canon.

A remake is all but confirmed. The franchise’s recent remakes have been commercially and critically successful, leaving only a handful of mainline entries that could receive similar treatment. While previous remakes have lightly altered plot elements, Capcom now holds the opportunity to completely rewrite canon within a Resident Evil 5 remake — establishing it as the definitive version.

This would not necessarily be a negative development. A fresh reimagining could give Capcom the chance to address the original game’s many thematic shortcomings while weaving together narrative threads that have accumulated across more than two decades of installments.

Looking Ahead

For now, fans are left with tantalizing hints rather than hard facts. Orkin’s comments confirm that Requiem’s story DLC will expand upon Spencer’s arc in meaningful ways, but Capcom has yet to announce a release window or additional content details. As speculation continues to build around both the expansion and a possible Resident Evil 5 remake, players will be watching closely for official confirmation of what these narrative choices mean for the future of one of gaming’s most enduring horror franchises.
