According to a report by Deadline, the new Resident Evil film has become the highest-grossing movie in the franchise’s history, reaching $320.2 million at the worldwide box office after a $62.7 million weekend gross.

The film, directed by Zach Cregger, opened domestically last month with $60 million — the best opening weekend for any Resident Evil movie to that point. Since expanding into China, Japan, and other territories, it has continued setting new box office records across four weekends in theaters.

The total surpasses 2016’s Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, which grossed $314.1 million worldwide. It also marks Cregger’s highest-grossing film, topping Weapons, which earned $270 million globally last year.

The box office success follows a wave of positive reviews. Resident Evil debuted with a near-perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes, making it the highest-rated video game movie around.

Polygon’s Jake Kleinman called the film a “near-perfect horror movie” in his review, praising how well it translates the experience of playing a Resident Evil game.

Cregger takes his love for both the franchise and the genre and channels them into something we’ve never really seen before. Resident Evil is funny, scary, gross, and beautiful. Above all else, it captures the fight-or-flight experience of actually playing a Resident Evil game.

Cregger said last month that while no sequel has been greenlit, he is already considering where the story could go next.

I’ve already got other ideas of what could happen. But my next movie is already kind of in place here, and it’s not a Resident Evil movie — I’m gonna go make something else. But on the other side of that, who knows? Who can say? Anything could happen.

The film arrives during a strong year for Capcom’s horror series, which also saw Resident Evil Requiem and new Resident Evil remakes land on Nintendo Switch 2 this month.
