According to a Polygon report, Resident Evil 3 Remake, now available on Nintendo Switch 2, delivers a stable, stutter-free experience that the developers clearly aimed for—though its visual appeal drops away once you dock the console.

The remake, released in 2020 by Capcom, reworked the story of S.T.A.R.S. officer Jill Valentine originally told in Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, which debuted in 1999 as what was initially conceived as a spin-off rather than a mainline entry.

The game follows Valentine in the weeks after the Spencer Mansion outbreak, as she struggles with fear of T-Virus infection while trying to escape Raccoon City just before it is overrun by zombies. She is pursued throughout by Nemesis, an unstoppable monster.

Resident Evil 3 Remake shifts toward a more action-oriented, cinematic style of storytelling compared with the original. An early encounter with Nemesis opens with Valentine searching for a building exit and ends with the player helping her start a car before she drives it into the creature.

The Polygon writer reported not seeing frame rate drops during playthroughs ranging from fire-filled areas to scenes crowded with multiple enemies, calling the camera responsiveness strong. They noted only the familiar frustrations of using dual analog sticks for aiming and adjusted camera sensitivity lower while targeting to land more headshots.

The smooth experience that the Switch 2 offers is great, but with one caveat: Resident Evil 3 Remake is actually better in handheld mode.

Polygon report

The remake was built to look its best using native high dynamic range (HDR). With HDR enabled, Capcom rendered Raccoon City’s streets with strong light-and-shadow contrast meant to feel oppressive. That setting disappears when the game is played docked on Switch 2.

In handheld mode, the writer described walking through dimly lit rooms and alleys while appreciating the smoothness of character models under lighting, even if they appeared sharper-edged than in the PlayStation 5 and PC versions. The console’s screen was said to do justice to Raccoon City’s atmosphere.

Once docked, however, HDR becomes unavailable and the writer found the difference striking—describing the image as covered by an opaque gray layer that drains color and life from a game they called playable without it but markedly diminished.

The report concluded that Jill and Nemesis’s cat-and-mouse story has “found a welcoming, FPS-stable home on Switch 2,” with the port feeling at home on Nintendo’s system—though only in handheld mode.
