Krafton announced the adaptation on 30 October, noting that Glover’s brother Stephen—who is his writing partner on Atlanta—will join as a writer and executive producer.

The series will also be executive produced by Michael Schaefer for Neon TV, Fam Udeorji for Gilga, and Taeseok Jang and Sujin Lee for LV3H. LV3H is Krafton’s entertainment division and is involved in both developing and producing the show.

There is as yet no information on a release window, plot, or who else will appear in the cast.

Glover is a two-time Emmy and Golden Globe winner, best known for Atlanta and Community. Krafton describes PUBG as “one of the world’s most enduring gaming franchises,” saying the game, which is credited with popularising the battle royale genre, holds seven Guinness World Records.

Earlier this month, Krafton revealed it was ending development of PUBG: Black Budget, the extraction shooter spin-off announced nearly a year ago. The publisher’s other titles include Subnautica and InZoi.

It has been speculated for some time that Call of Duty may be losing its lustre. Although there is no concrete data with detailed statistics for each game released in the last several years, there is an observable trend in player numbers that is hard to ignore.

US market analysis firm Circana published data showing player engagement with Modern Warfare 4 following its launch, comparing them to those for Black Ops 7.

The data is based on Circana’s proprietary Player Engagement Tracker, which tracks player activity in the US across Steam and PlayStation, and worldwide on Xbox. According to Circana analyst Mat Piscatella, 19 percent of players on PlayStation played Modern Warfare 4 in the week ending 24 October, compared to 17 percent on Xbox and 4.2 percent on Steam.

Except for Steam, those figures trail last year’s Black Ops 7, which recorded 23 percent engagement on PlayStation, 29 percent on Xbox and a mere 1.5 percent on Steam during its launch week.

Call of Duty cracked the top 10 across all three platforms that same week ending 24 October, according to Circana. It finished just behind Fortnite on PlayStation, a respectable showing.

The sharp decline on Xbox may be tied to Modern Warfare 4’s absence from Game Pass on day one. Black Ops 7 was the second and final Call of Duty to launch on Game Pass simultaneously with its premium release. Game Pass availability usually lifts player counts, if not always sales.

The PlayStation dip is harder to pin down, but it could stem from the hugely successful Black Ops 1 & 2 ports released this summer on PS4 and PS5, which drew back former players who may have simply lost interest in modern Call of Duty, regardless of how Modern Warfare 4 was perceived.

Based on the data available, such as SteamDB figures comparing Modern Warfare 4’s launch to Black Ops 7’s and other recent releases, there are signs this year’s entry may not have been as popular as it could have been.

Even Activision’s tone when discussing Call of Duty’s first weekend sales has shifted. The publisher released a single statement after Modern Warfare 4’s launch, delivered through Xbox CEO Asha Sharma, which doesn’t even name the game.

“One of the most celebrated Call of Duty games in its 24-year history, and now $40bn in lifetime franchise revenue,” Sharma wrote on X. “An incredible milestone. Congrats to the Activision team. And to the players, thank you for being with us.”

Last year’s Black Ops 7 post-launch statement avoided mentioning sales and revenue altogether, instead praising the “great response to the quality and depth of gameplay in Black Ops 7”.
