Even though it costs an arm and a leg, and it has far fewer exclusive games, the PS5 continues to outsell the PS4 in the USA when you compare the same point in their lifespans.

Via analyst Mat Piscatella of Circana, we’re currently in the 71st month of the PS5 generation. When you compare total sales in the USA to the same month of the PS4 generation, the PS5 is outselling the PS4 by 1%. It is also outselling the PS3 at the same point in the USA by 30%.
If you narrow the data to sales during 2026, then PS5 is 3% behind PS4. However, looking at the generation as a whole, PS5 is still ahead by a sliver across the USA.
What makes this statistic impressive is the fact Sony has still managed it despite serious supply issues at the start of the generation, as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. And now, all these years later, the PS5 is being sold at $650 for the base PS5 and $900 for the PS5 Pro.
In comparison, you could get the PS4 for $200 with The Last of Us Remastered, God of War, and Horizon Zero Dawn at the same point in time after launch during the previous generation. Accounting for inflation, that $200 price point does not translate into anything more than $270 in today’s money.
Those three games I just mentioned also play a factor, for one of the criticisms fans have of the PS5 generation is a lack of exclusive games. PS4 had many, offering a variety of reasons why you’d want to own a PS4 over an Xbox One. That’s not really the case for PS5, which only has a handful of true exclusives — Demon’s Souls, Saros, and Marvel’s Wolverine, for example.
PC ports did start to eat into the PS4’s exclusive catalogue, but at the time (and for many years after their release), you could only play the likes of Uncharted 4, Marvel’s Spider-Man, and The Last of Us 2 on the Sony system.
As the firm has stepped away from those PC ports again, only making them for live-service titles, there should be more PS5 exclusives by the end of the generation — Until Dawn 2, God of War Laufey, and Intergalactic to name a few.
Despite all that, US residents are buying the PS5 slightly more than the PS4 at the same point in time.
In addition, the PS5 is expected to receive a huge boost next month with the arrival of GTA 6. As the most anticipated entertainment launch of all time rolls around, console sales are expected to spike. Come the end of the year, the small percentage could be slightly more than 1%.
